Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago’s Season Opening Concert
Join the Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago and Mina Zikri, Music Director, for its opening concert of the 2022-2023 season on September 18, 2022, at 7 p.m. It will be at the Gannon Concert Hall of the Holtschneider Performance Center at the DePaul University School of Music, 2330 N. Hasted St., Chicago, IL.
The concert features 16-year-old cellist Jan Vargas Nedvetsky performing Haydn Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major Hob. Vllb: 2. The Orchestra will also perform Mozart Symphony No. 30 in D Major K. 202.
Jan is a merit scholarship Fellow at the Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago, a training center for advanced pre-college musicians, and at the Chicago Musical Pathway Initiative, an organization supporting gifted musicians from under-represented backgrounds.

The Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago was founded in 2005 by Music Director Mina Zikri. Mr. Zikri is a violinist and assistant conductor to Daniel Barenboim; he travels with the West Eastern Divan Orchestra on annual tours to major music festivals and concert halls around the world. He returns each season to his native Egypt to guest conduct the National Symphony. Mr. Zikri is a faculty member at the DePaul University Community Music Division, where he conducts the DePaul Youth Orchestra and the New Horizon String Orchestra. He is also the Resident Conductor of the Lira Ensemble and Music Director of the Northbrook Symphony.
The Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago draws young professionals and recent graduates from major music programs in the Chicago area, in particular the DePaul University School of Music, with whom it has a strong professional relationship. Starting the 2019-2020 season, OSC was named Orchestra in Residence at the Holtschneider Performance Center, DePaul University School of Music. OSC concerts feature well-known soloists, present young soloists, and mentor young talents.
