Suspicious Package Evacuates Arlington Heights Newspaper Office

A suspicious package with an “angry political message” and an unidentified white powder was delivered this morning to an Arlington Heights newspaper office causing an hour-long evacuation. No injuries were reported.

Officials with the FBI Chicago Field Office said their agents responded to the Daily Herald, 95 W. Algonquin Rd., Arlington Heights. There was no threat to public safety and “the immediate incident has been resolved,” the FBI said. An FBI spokeswoman said she could provide no further details.

Arlington Heights police referred questions to the FBI and said they could not release any information, including when the incident was first reported and resolved.

The Daily Herald reported a 9-inch by 12-inch envelope was delivered to the newspaper via the U.S. Postal Service with “an angry political message” written on the envelope.

As the package was handled, white powder fell from the envelope. Three employees were examined for exposure to the powder but exhibited no symptoms.

Along with law enforcement, firefighters from Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Palatine and Schaumburg along with a decontamination unit from the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System responded to the scene.
