Gov. JB Pritzker’s “stay-at-home” order due to the coronavirus pandemic issued Friday closed additional local park facilities.

“In accordance with this order, all park district facilities will be closed until April 8,” the Glenview Park District said in a written statement. “All open spaces, trails, and parks will remain open to the public, but the following amenities will be closed to the public: playgrounds, skate parks, outdoor fitness equipment, (and) public restrooms.”

The governor’s order said going outside to exercise along with performing other necessary functions such as shopping at grocery stores and pharmacies, acting as a caretaker to check on family, or going to medical appointments, are all exemptions to the stay-at-home order.

Park district officials pointed to a section of the governor’s executive order ordering places of public amusement, including playgrounds, closed.

“All places of public amusement, whether indoors or outdoors, including but not limited to, locations with amusement rides, carnivals, amusement parks, water parks, aquariums, zoos, museums, arcades, fairs, children’s play centers, playgrounds, funplexes, theme parks, bowling alleys, movie and other theaters, concert and music halls, and country clubs or social clubs shall be closed to the public,” the governor’s order reads.

The order adds, “Any gathering of more than 10 people is prohibited unless exempted by this executive order.”
