Smoke Detector Alerts Palatine Residents To Condo Fire

A smoke detector alerted a resident to a fire in a Palatine condominium building, which allowed everyone to evacuate their homes without injury.

At approximately 9:38 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, the Palatine Fire Department responded to a condominium fire at 147 W. Brandon Ct. in Palatine.

Upon arrival, firefighters accessed the second floor and found smoke in the hallway. After they entered the unit, they found smoke and flames. The initial firefighters on the scene used a pressurized water extinguisher to quickly extinguish the main body of fire. The fire was contained to the condominium’s laundry room and hallway.

An additional extinguisher and hoseline was used to extinguish the remaining embers and hot spots from the fire. Firefighters conducted a search and found everyone had evacuated the building. At approximately 10:16 a.m., the fire was declared under control. Firefighters continued to perform salvage, overhaul, and investigative activities for some time after that.

No one was injured in the fire. At this time, damage estimates and the cause of the fire are not available.

Approximately 26 firefighters staffing four engines, one aerial device, three ambulances and one rescue squad responded to the scene. Three command officers, two fire investigators and units from the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District and Rolling Meadows Fire Department were on the scene.

A Barrington ambulance stood by in a Palatine fire station to help out on any additional calls while firefighters were at the scene. Palatine police officers assisted residents at the scene and provided traffic control.

Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone that working smoke alarms save lives and to make sure smoke detectors are less than 10 years old and have working batteries.
