Rosemont To Regulate Short-Term Rentals

Though there are no listings for Rosemont on Airbnb, a popular website for short-term rental units, the village plans to regulate potential rentals.

A text amendment to village code covering the issue is expected to be considered by the zoning board following a public hearing at 3 p.m. Tuesday (March 6).

After launching in 2008, Airbnb, an online marketplace where homeowners or renters can offer their home or a portion of their home to renters for short stays, became popular with travelers. With close proximity to downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport, the Northwest suburbs generates significant short-term rental business.

Over the past years, nearby suburbs including Park Ridge and Des Plaines have added specific regulations on short-term rentals to their municipal codes in response to the surge in popularity. While there are no rentals available in Rosemont on Airbnb, there are some listed in nearby towns, including Park Ridge, Des Plaines, Schiller Park and Norridge.

According to the Rosemont public building notice, the new ordinance would define short-term rentals as “a rental or licensing for any period less than 28 days of any portion of a single family dwelling, multiple dwelling, group house or row house.”

The ordinance would also prevent any single family dwellings permitted in the A single family district, and multiple dwellings and group or row houses permitted in the C multiple dwelling district from being used as a short-term rental. Along with the new language, a previous “rooming and boarding house” permitted use in the C district would be removed.

“We haven’t had any problems with them in Rosemont,” said Rosemont Public Safety detective Joe Balogh of short-term rentals, adding there is limited residential space in the village.

Members of the public can comment on the proposed ordinance in person, or file objections and other comments with the Rosemont village clerk prior to Tuesday’s meeting. Zoning board members will provide a recommendation to the village board, which must also approve the ordinance.
