Mount Prospect Planning & Zoning commissioners (P&Z) voted six to zero, approving the draft zoning code amendments related to recreational cannabis sales to move forward to the board of trustees.

The approval of the draft zoning code amendments by P&Z does not mean the village is opting in on recreational cannabis sales. Trustees will still have to go through the public hearing process and then vote.

The draft ordinance, if approved, would amend chapters in the village code.

One of the chapters that would be amended is chapter 11. In the amendment, definitions of each cannabis business type were defined and regulations for dispensing organizations were outlined.

Many of these reiterate the state’s recreational cannabis act; however, modifications for reflect the village’s needs were put in. For example, chapter 11 would contain language which would prohibit cannabis lounges, social spaces or allow any establishment to have on-site consumption.

In chapter 14, it states general regulations; for example, any cannabis related business in the village would be conditional use. Even if the village decides to opt-in, the state of Illinois must first approve a license in the area before any recreational cannabis business can open and start selling can happen. Once approved by the state, the proposed business would have to be approved by the P&Z commission and then receive approval from the board of trustees.

The first tentative public reading by the board of trustees is set for Tuesday, Dec. 3.
