Obstruction On Blue Line Hampers Morning Commute

Morning commutes on the CTA Blue Line were disrupted for approximately two hours between O’Hare Airport and Cumberland Avenue this morning (Monday) due to an obstruction on the tracks near the Rosemont station.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., a southbound vehicle ended up in the right of way of the Blue Line, CTA spokeswoman Irene Ferradaz said.

The car left the roadway through a fence, Rosemont Sgt. Joe Balogh said, and the front portion of the car ended up on the electrified third rail. The third rail is what powers the trains.

Balogh said Illinois State Police took the call, but Rosemont responded and assisted CTA workers with turning off power to the third rail before responders went any further.

The CTA offered shuttle buses between the O’Hare and Harlem Avenue Blue Line stations, Ferradaz said, but the situation remained challenging during rush hour. The CTA’s Twitter account advised travelers to allow for extra time or to seek alternate routes.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
