Niles Blotter: Apology Not Enough For Bicycle Rider

Assault Charged

Ashur Khoshaba, 37, of the 8000 block of Lyons Street in Niles, was charged with assault and criminal damage to vehicle at 1:41 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Khoshaba was on a bicycle in the 9300 block of N. Milwaukee Avenue when a man in a car nearly struck him. The driver apologized to Khoshaba for the near collision but Khoshaba allegedly scratched the man’s car and tried to punch him in the face.

Disorderly Conduct Charged

Sandra K. Luke, 57, of the 8600 block of Skokie Blvd. in Skokie, was charged with disorderly conduct at 6:29 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. She was apprehended at Noodles and Co., 5681 Touhy Ave. She was also served an outstanding warrant.

Joanna C. Riggio, 35, of the 4800 block of N. Linder Avenue in Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct at Jewel/Osco, 5667 W. Touhy Ave. She allegedly spit in the face of another driver during a road rage incident in the parking lot at 7:36 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12.

Sergio Martinez, 34, of the 2400 block of N. Avers Avenue in Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct at Fresh Farms, 8203 W. Golf Rd. He allegedly got into a fight with a coworker in the parking lot at 1:25 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.

Battery Reported

A patron at Carom Café, 9090 W. Golf Rd., struck an employee in the head two times after the employee asked her to leave for not wearing a mask. The incident occurred at 11:14 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

Animal Cruelty Charged

Hermann Thiess, 82, of the 7400 block of Jonquil Terrace in Niles, was charged with cruelty to animals at 11:26 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9. He allegedly left a dog in his car at Costco, 7311 N. Melvina Ave., for approximately an hour. The car had an interior temperature of 100 degrees, police said.

Dog Bite Reported

A worker at Portillo’s Restaurant, 8832 W. Dempster St., told police he was taking an order from a drive up customer at 7:34 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 when a dog in the back seat growled and then bit him on the arm. The worker was treated at a local hospital. Police could not recover video of the incident at the time of the report.

Drug Charges

Ken Smurawaski, 35, of the 7700 block of N. Nordica Avenue in Niles, was charged with possession of cannabis at 2:53 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. He was located sleeping in the grass at W. Cleveland Street and Waukegan Road. During a search, he was found to allegedly be in possession of suspected cannabis.

DUI Charges

Derek E. Howard, 29, of the 8400 block of Olcott Avenue in Niles, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, leaving the scene of an accident, and resisting police at 5:33 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. He was allegedly involved in a traffic crash at an undisclosed location and time in Niles. Police apprehended him in the 8300 block of W. Golf Road but he allegedly resisted officers during the apprehension. He allegedly admitted to using LSD and cannabis before the alleged traffic crash.

Jesser A. Oaxaca, 32, of the 9100 block of W. Church Street in Des Plaines, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol at 12:07 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. He was taken into custody after an alleged traffic crash at Ballard Road and Cumberland Avenue. He allegedly failed field sobriety tests and later was offered a breath test. Police did not report if he submitted to the test or if any additional charges were placed against him.

Mohammad A. Awan, 37, of the 8000 block of W. Lyons Street in Niles, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs at 4:48 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12. He was taken into custody after an alleged traffic crash in the 8700 block of Milwaukee Avenue. He allegedly refused to perform field sobriety tests or a breath test. Police did not state if any additional tickets were given to him.

Alcohol Charges

Gabriel Valle, 42, of the 8900 block of Robin Drive in Des Plaines, was charged with drinking alcohol in the public way. He was allegedly drinking beer in the 8500 block of W. Dempster Street at 9:44 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9.

Shashaah Mustafa, 34, of the 7000 block of W. 115th Street in Worth, was charged with public intoxication at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. He was taken into custody at Mango’s Restaurant, 8743 Milwaukee Ave.

Helen Soloveychik, 43, of the 300 block of Ninth Street in Wheeling, was charged with public intoxication. She was located in an alleged extremely intoxicated state trying to enter J.C. Penney in Golf Mill Mall at 10:39 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Retail Theft Charged

Kevin C. Stewart, 63, of the 6400 block of S. Yale Avenue in Chicago, was charged with retail theft at J.C. Penney in Golf Mill Mall. He was apprehended at 6:02 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 after he allegedly tried to leave without paying for pants, coats and shoes.

Juan C. Cortez-Velasquez, 26, of the 9400 block of Potter Road in Des Plaines, was charged with retail theft and criminal trespass to property at Fresh Farms, 8203 W. Golf Rd. At 3:41 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, he allegedly tried to leave without paying for a can of beer valued at $2.99. He had been terminated from his employment at the store on May 18 for allegedly stealing alcohol and was warned not to return to the business.

Retail Theft Reported

A man and woman took cosmetics from Walgreens Drug Store, 5600 W. Touhy Ave., at 2:46 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13.

An unknown man took 20 bottles of liquor from Costco, 7311 N. Melvina Ave., at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. He fled through an emergency exit.

An unknown man took a video game system valued at $350 from Game Stop, 5695 W. Touhy Ave., at 4:14 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.

Driving Charges

Ramon E. San, 20, of the 9600 block of Golf Terrace in Des Plaines, was charged with driving with a suspended driver’s license at 9:42 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. She was taken into custody after an alleged traffic crash at N. Milwaukee and W. Jarvis avenues.

Rafael E. Milan, 56, of the 6800 block of W. Oakton Court in Niles, was charged with driving with a suspended driver’s license. Police apprehended him at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 after an alleged traffic crash at N. Milwaukee Avenue and W. Cleveland Street.

Arnold R. Ramirez-Dominguez, 27, of the 7200 block of Clarence Avenue in Chicago, was charged with speeding at 10:24 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. An officer stopped him for allegedly driving at 72 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 7800 block of W. Dempster Street.

Estera Medrea, 56, of the 5000 block of N. Marine Drive in Chicago, was charged with speeding. Police pulled her over at 1:02 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11 for allegedly driving at 61 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 7900 block of W. Dempster Street.

Syed A. Khan, 20, of the 4100 block of Oakton Street in Skokie, was charged with speeding at 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. He was stopped for allegedly driving at 85 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 8500 block of Milwaukee Avenue.

Marlene Aguilar, 28, of the 9200 block of Hamilton Circle in Des Plaines, was charged with no valid driver’s license. She was apprehended at 3:12 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 after an alleged traffic crash at Golf and Dee roads.

Jennifer Roman, 19, of the 8200 block of W. Dempster Street in Niles, was charged with no valid driver’s license at 4:11 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. Police apprehended her after an alleged traffic crash in the 9000 block of Milwaukee Avenue.

Austin R. Bolesta, 28, of the first block of Pauline Circle in Schaumburg, was charged with speeding. An officer pulled him over in the 7900 block of Dempster Street for allegedly driving at 65 mph in a 35 mph zone at 9:13 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.

Salma Alzerijawi, 20, of the 8800 block of Avers Avenue in Skokie, was charged with speeding at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. She was stopped in the 7900 block of W. Dempster Street for allegedly driving at 63 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Nicolas E. Petry, 20, of the 4600 block of 19th Street in San Francisco, CA, was charged with speeding. An officer pulled him over at 1:26 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 for allegedly driving at 63 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 7900 block of W. Dempster Street.

Asfand Sheikh, 24, of the 7100 block of Kedzie Street in Niles, was charged with no valid driver’s license at 2:41 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. He was stopped in the 7500 block of Dempster Street for allegedly driving at 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. Police did not state if any additional tickets were given to him.

Jaden T. Wade-Roberts, 20, of the 1800 block of N. Laramie Avenue in Chicago, was charged with no valid driver’s license after an alleged traffic crash. He was apprehended at 10:44 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 after a roll over traffic crash at Howard and Menard streets.

Stolen Vehicle

A vehicle was taken from the 8800 block of N. Prospect Street before 6:27 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12.

Burglaries and Thefts

A wallet was taken from a woman’s purse while she shopped at Marshalls, 8249 W. Golf Rd., before 7:23 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

Someone took a wallet from a woman’s purse while she was shopping at Jewel/Osco, 5667 W. Touhy Ave. The theft occurred between 4:45 and 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

A man kicked in the door of Walgreens Drug Store, 8001 N. Milwaukee Ave., at 1:42 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 and fled with 57 packs of cigarettes and four Nerf guns.

A table computer was taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 5600 block of W. Touhy Avenue before 3:27 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Someone took the catalytic converter from a 2001 Cadillac DeVille in the 8600 block of N. National Street. The theft occurred between midnight and 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.

The catalytic converter was taken from a Mazda MPV at Shermer and Greenleaf roads between 1:30 and 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
