MP Police Blotter: Couple Notices $15K Missing From Safe After Coming Home From Trip

Burglary Report

Police at approximately 3 p.m. Dec. 27 responded to 1456 N. Elmhurst Rd. for a burglary report. A couple told police they returned home from Las Vegas and discovered that almost $15,000 was missing from their safe. The residence was locked when they returned home and nothing appeared to be out of place. The woman said her sister was released from jail in May 2017 and stayed with them for approximately three months over the summer. When she moved out, she did not return the front door or house key, police said.

Stolen Vehicle Report

Police at 9:17 a.m. Jan. 31 responded to a home on W. Lincoln Street for an investigation. Officers received a report that a woman’s Chevy Avalanche was stolen and the incident was reported to Chicago police on Jan. 30. The woman stated she believed her contractor took the car and had it in possession at his home on Lincoln. Police made contact with the contractor who stated he was doing remodeling work for the woman at her home in Chicago. He told police the woman could not afford to pay him the complete cash amount for the work done on her home, so they entered an agreement to give him the car as partial payment for the work. He also showed police a text message thread outlining the agreement to take the vehicle.
Police at 3:51 p.m. Jan. 26 responded to 2348 S. Cannon Dr. for a stolen auto report. According to police, a man stated he recently moved into town from Georgia and parked his vehicle around 7 a.m. when he came home from work. He went out to the vehicle around 10 a.m. and then returned to the apartment. The man then went out to the parking lot at 3:30 p.m. and noticed the vehicle was gone. Police found out Jan. 27 that the car was repossessed.

Suspicious Incident

Police at 3:43 p.m. Jan. 17 were dispatched to T-Mobile, 114 E. Kensington Rd., for a suspicious incident call. Prior to being dispatched, police were contacted by Highland Park police regarding this suspicious incident. Highland Park police stated that a resident in that town contacted police after he was notified by an employee of the T-Mobile in Mount Prospect that someone was using a fake driver’s license with the man’s information to purchase a new iPhone 8. An employee at the Mount Prospect store stated a man came into the store at around 12:30 p.m. Jan. 17 and inquired about the same type of phone. He presented the employee a driver’s license with the name of the man from Highland Park. The man decided on a phone and said he would be back with money to pay for it. Employees thought the interaction was odd, so they contacted the man who informed employees he was never at the Mount Prospect location.

Customer Management Dispute

Police at 7:32 p.m. Jan. 25 responded to Steak ‘N Shake, 201 E. Euclid Ave., for a customer management dispute. The manager told police a male customer came in and placed an order for burgers and a milkshake. The customer was provided the milkshake while waiting for the burgers. The manager said the restaurant incorrectly made the order and informed the man they could remake the food. The man stated he wanted a refund for the food minus the shake. He was refunded minus the shake, the report said, but the man became upset and wanted to be reimbursed for the shake. The report said he took the remainder of the shake and poured it over the receipt printer next to the register and left the restaurant. Police located the man in Prospect Heights. He was informed not to return to the establishment or he would be arrested.

Fraud Report

Police received a report Jan. 31 from a man stating he received a package at his business on Golf Road in early January that included a Bluetooth credit card reader used by private businesses to accept payment. He told police he owns and operates a local landscaping company but only accepts cash or check for payment. He stated he never ordered the card reader. He told police he received billing statements from the company in his name after receiving the card reader. He also told police he never used the card reader.

Theft Report

Police at 3:15 p.m. Jan. 26 responded to L.A. Fitness, 1145 Mount Prospect Plaza, for a theft report. A man told police he arrived at the health club at approximately 2:45 p.m., had just finished golfing and wanted to use the sauna and shower. He said he locked his clothes using a combination lock and when he returned 15-20 minutes later, he saw one of his shoes on the floor. He told police he looked inside the locker and his hoodie and pants were missing along with a cell phone, keys and pair of wireless earbuds.

Burglary To Motor Vehicle

Police at 1:26 p.m. Jan. 27 responded to 508 N. Russell St. for a burglary to motor vehicle that occured in the driveway. A man told police he exited his mother’s home at approximately 1 p.m. Jan. 26 and noticed the mother’s boyfriend’s Ford Escape that was parked in the driveway had a shattered rear window. The man said that three different trailer hitches, wrenches, screwdrivers and a hammer along with a leaf blower were all taken from the rear trunk area.

Criminal Damage To Property

Police received a report Jan. 16 from a man stating that between 4:30-5 p.m. the day before, he drove his Mitsubishi vehicle to Costco, 999 N. Elmhurst Rd., and parked it in the lot. He came back to the car about 45 minutes later and drove to his home in Des Plaines. It began to snow, which covered his car, so the next day when he went to clean off the car, he noticed the word “Nazi” and a swastika scratched into his hood. He also noticed more scratches carved into the bumper. He started driving to Maine West High School and observed driving and steering issues. He returned to the vehicle at the high school at approximately 11 a.m. Jan. 16 and told police both front tires and rear driver’s tire were losing air due to punctures.
