MP Plans Inaugural Weekend Of Music

For the first time, Mount Prospect will play host to artists performing at local venues over a three-day span. The inaugural “56 Music Fix” will be held Aug. 24-26 and consist of musicians performing inside and outside businesses across the village.

Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce Director Dawn Fletcher Collins said the chamber was recently approached by residents about inviting musicians to perform locally. “This is all about local musicians who enjoy playing, but do not have a lot of opportunities to perform, but are also passionate about the village,” Collins said. “After the residents approached me, I said ‘let’s do it’.”

Collins said planning the event has been in the works for the past three months.

“We are focusing on local bands or performers who do not make a lot of money but maybe play regularly at other establishments in other towns,” Collins said. “We are making sure locals get priority.”

The establishments that each performer plays at will pay those individuals privately, but the chamber is helping promote the artists in hopes of drawing big crowds.

The name “56 Music Fix” came from the village’s zip code ending in 56. Collins said a few residents came up with the idea and name for the weekend event.

Collins expects 25 locations (on a conservative level) to host around 50 musicians, if not more. Venues already lined up include Brick City Tavern, Mrs. P & Me, Emerson’s Ale House, Mia’s Cantina, Trezeros Kitchen and Tap, and Sam’s Place.

The weekend is expected to conclude with jazz bands performing at Lions Park Bandshell. Collins said she expects the event to occur next year at the same time and include works of art as well.
