MP Lions Club Supports Food Pantry With Drive, $10K Donation

Responding to a critical community need as a result of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the Mount Prospect Lions Club will be collecting non-perishable food donations, fresh produce and making a significant financial contribution this month to the Mount Prospect Food Pantry.

The Lions Club food drive will be held on Oct. 18 and 25 in conjunction with its Sunday morning farmers market, which has been extended to Oct. 25. Food donations will be collected in a shopping cart near the entrance of the east Metra parking lot at the intersection of Emerson Street and Northwest Highway in downtown Mount Prospect from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Market vendors will also partner in this effort by donating their leftover fresh produce on those Sundays.

In addition, the Lions Club will be donating $10,000 to the food pantry, which is normally provided at the end of the farmers market each year. However, the Lions Club has expedited this financial contribution to provide support as quickly as possible after COVID-19 placed many unplanned restrictions on the food pantry’s operations.

“The Mount Prospect Food Pantry is bare and the need is greater than ever,” said Carol Baldini, office manager at the Mount Prospect Human Services Department. “During the pandemic, we could only distribute food curbside on a monthly basis and it impeded our ability to accept crucial food donations. We are grateful for the support of our community partner, the Mount Prospect Lions Club, for stepping up during these challenging times.”

The items most needed include: canned fruit/fruit cups; canned beef stew, chicken and dumplings, spam; canned meats/tuna; canned ravioli and spaghetti; cookies; crackers; tomato sauce and spaghetti sauce; jam and jelly; instant mashed potatoes; gluten free items; and sugar free items.

“The Mount Prospect Lions Club is grateful for support from the community coming together at a difficult time to help us feed our hungry neighbors and support our local food pantry,” said Fred Steinmiller, Lions Club president.

Founded in 1934, the Mount Prospect Lions Club is one of the area’s largest financial contributors to local organizations, churches and schools who help blind, hearing-impaired, disabled, and many other individuals in need in Mount Prospect and surrounding communities.
