Mount Prospect Public Works Honored For Snow, Ice Removal Efforts

Mount Prospect announced the village’s public works department has been recognized by the American Public Works Association (APWA) with the 2018 Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award.

This national award was established by the APWA in 2008 to promote excellence in public works snow and ice operations. It promotes best practices in snow and ice removal, which includes minimizing environmental impacts.

The APWA accepts nominations for the award on an annual basis. Applications are accepted in February of each year. Nominees must provide documentation that specifically addresses particular criteria as well as supporting documentation that adequately details specific categories.

To be considered, nominees are also required to submit a letter of recommendation. The APWA Chicago Metro Chapter cordially wrote a letter on behalf of the Mount Prospect Public Works Dept.

One of the primary objectives of the public works is to provide for the safe and orderly passage of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Safe passage is accomplished by successfully facilitating the removal of snow and ice in a timely manner. Public works operates and maintains approximately 137 centerline miles of streets and 274 miles of sidewalks.

Public works maintains a comprehensive snow and ice control plan that allows for the effective management of a complex operation like snow and ice control. The snow and ice control plan is a comprehensive document that denotes the procedures implemented in the department’s ongoing effort to set industry standards for snow and ice removal.

“To be recognized at the national level for our snow and ice control efforts is a tremendous honor. This recognition is only possible due to the efforts of the dedicated men and women of the public works department,” Mount Prospect Public Works Director Sean Dorsey said.

The award will be presented to the Mount Prospect Public Works Dept. at the APWA North American Snow Conference in May.
