A motorcyclist remains alive after he became pinned under a minivan and suffered serious injuries Saturday afternoon in Elk Grove Village.

Elk Grove Village Police Traffic Sgt. Randy Schumacher said the Toyota Sienna minivan was turning left from eastbound Oakton Street to northbound Busse Road, when it failed to yield to the motorcycle traveling west on Oakton. The crash occurred at about 12:30 p.m.

On impact with the van, Schumacher said the cyclist was thrown from his sport bike. An estimated 25 bystanders rushed to the scene, lifting part of the van off the biker to pull him free.

The cyclist suffered a broken clavicle and might have torn his aorta, Schumacher said. He was wearing full safety gear including a helmet, jacket and heavy boots.

The intersection of Oakton and Busse was shut down for four hours after the accident while police conducted their investigation. As of Monday, charges had yet to be filed as Schumacher said the investigation was not complete.
