Mary Catherine ThingFree Access


Mary Catherine Thing (nee Bloze) passed away January 17th, 2024, at the age 96. Mary was born January 8, 1928 to Michael and Marie Bloze. Born and raised in Chicago, she graduated from Knickerbacher Grammar School in 1942 and Waller High School in 1946. She worked at Montgomery Ward on Chicago Ave. from 1946 until 1954, when she had her first child. She married C. Wayne Thing on October 2nd, 1948, marriage of 56-1/2 years, that lasted until Wayne’s death in 2005. Wayne and Mary moved to Des Plaines in 1958, where they raised their three children. Mary was an at-home mother, she also spent much of her time volunteering. She was a very active member of St. Mary’s Church in Des Plaines and a member of their Alter and Rosary Society since 1960. She delighted in delivering Meals on Wheels for over 40 years. In 1978 she began volunteering for the Tourette Syndrome Association for over 30 years. She was also a member of the Des Plaines History Center, where she enjoyed helping with their mailings. Mary is survived by her three children, Wayne (Pamela), James (Monica) and Dianne (Kurt) Kuehn. Along with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren (and her 6th on the way). She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother Michael.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at G.L. Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Avenue, Des Plaines, Illinois. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 26, 2024 beginning with prayers at 10:15 at the funeral home, Mass to follow at 11:00 am at St. Mary Church, 794 Pearson St., Des Plaines, Illinois. Interment in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s name may be made to Tourette Syndrome Camp USA, www.paypal.com/paypalme/tourettecampusa, or JourneyCare Hospice, journeycare.org/donate.
