Maine West Softball Off To 4-2 Start


Maine West softball opened the season with a tough loss to Barrington, before responding with a four-game win streak. The streak was ended Tuesday, March 26 with a 13-2 loss to Taft at home in Des Plaines to drop the Warriors to 4-2 this season.

Taft jumped out to a 1-0 lead early with a solo HR by the third hitter of the game. The game remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Taft exploded for 8 runs to take a 9-0 lead.
Maine West finally scored on a groundout by Abigail Gawlinski (0-for-3, 1 RBI) to plate Emily Divelbiss (1-for-2, 1 run) in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 9-1. Taft scored 1 run in the fifth and 3 in the sixth to make it 13-1 in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Mariya Adams (2-for-3, 1 RBI) singled to score Gabby Demma (1-for-2, 1 run) to make it the final score of 13-2.
Katelyn Weber (1-for-2) and Yessenia Vilches (1-for-2) also contributed with hits in the loss.
Maine West went 2-0 Saturday, March 23, including a no-hitter by Jessica Steingard (6 IP, 6 K, 0 BB, 1 unearned run) in the first game over Regina Dominican.
Maine West won 12-1 in the no-hitter and 12-2 in the second game. In the first game, West was led by Olivia Feldkamp (3-for-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 run, 2 SB), Brianna Torres (3-for-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 3 runs), Amanda Byrne (2-for-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Divelbiss (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Adams (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run).
In the second game Byrne (3-for-4, 1 HR, 1 3B, 1 2B, 5 RBI, 3 runs, 2 SB) nearly hit for the cycle to lead the Warriors. Demma (2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 runs), Weber (2-for-3, 1 RBI, 2 runs), Liliana Sanchez (1-for-3, 3 runs) and Angeles Beiza (1-for-1, 2 RBI) also helped lead Maine West. Regina recorded five different players with hits, but Kathryn McDarrah (1 RBI) was the only one with a double.
The Warriors beat Deerfield 5-4 and Zion-Benton 8-5 to kickstart the win streak that ended at four games.
