Jewell Loyd Wins WNBA Championship With Storm


Niles West alumna Jewell Loyd enjoyed another outstanding year for the Seattle Storm and helped her team wrap up a sweep in the WNBA Finals (3-0) over the Washington Mystics Wednesday, Sept. 12.
The Lincolnwood native led Seattle with 23 points (9-for-12 shooting, 3-for-3 3-point) with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Loyd struggled in the final 2 games, scoring 13 points (5-for-15 shooting, 0-for-6 3-point) in game two and 6 points (2-for-11 shooting, 0-for-3 3-point) in the deciding game three.
Over the three games in the finals, she scored 42 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals.
Seattle, which went 26-8 in the regular season for the best record, went 6-2 in the playoffs, including winning their final four games.
Over the 8 playoff games, Loyd played 250 minutes with 97 points (12.1 ppg), 40 rebounds, 26 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks.
In the regular season, Loyd started all 34 games and recorded 528 points (182-for-430 shooting), 155 rebounds, 126 assists, 43 steals and 5 blocks. She set career highs in 3-point shots made (67) and attempted (181), rebounds, assists and steals.
Over her career, after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2015, she has played 136 games (125 starts) with 2,055 points, 499 rebounds, 424 assists, 147 steals and 35 blocks.
Loyd, who played three years of college basketball at University of Notre Dame, won’t turn 25 until Oct. 5. With four years under her belt already, look for her to have a long playing career as a role model to girls basketball players across Chicago’s suburbs and the U.S.
