Incumbent Jan Schakowsky is running for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives 9th District seat against Republican Max Rice.)

Job/professional background: Political organizer

Elected office currently or previously held, and/or any other service as a volunteer, or in community, education, etc. settings: Member of Congress; previously elected to the State Assembly

How long have you lived in the district you wish to represent?: 77 years

Do you have any conflicts of interest, which could arise from holding this office? If so, how would you address those?: No.

Do you have any financial or business interests within the boundaries of the district you seek to represent, or who may work in the district you seek to represent?: No.

Do you have any criminal convictions (other than a minor traffic violation)? Please explain the circumstances: I have been arrested three times during the act of protesting; once for immigration rights, once for worker rights, and once for reproductive freedom.

Who are personal heroes to you, or who has provided significant guidance, insight, or acted as an example for how to live your life? How and why?: John Lewis is a hero of mine — his relentless optimism and commitment to justice are things I seek to emulate everyday.

What is something about yourself that might surprise people?: I am the proud parent of two wonderful dogs, Franklin and Eleanor.  Eleanor is a bit famous — she won the Cutest Dog on Capitol Hill contest.

Why should someone vote for you?: As a seasoned, progressive legislator, I have a history of delivering for my constituents. Whether it be community projects funded this past Congress, or my efforts to protect consumers and lower health care costs, I have been delivering for a long time, and plan to keep doing so.

Why are you running for this office?: Two words – my constituents. As someone who has devoted my life to protecting consumers and lowering health care costs for families, I know the hard work that needs to be done to deliver results like these for my constituents, and I am committed to doing so.

What experience do you have, which prepares you to hold this office?: In addition to my time serving the people of Illinois’ 9th District, I spent my life advocating for seniors, for consumers, and for working people. The perspective I gained from this experience is what drives me every day.
