Happy Thanksgiving

Editor, Journal:

It becomes easy for us to take our liberty and blessings for granted, but A. Lincoln reinstituted one day a year, Thanksgiving, to remember and give thanks for all that we have in this country. This Thanksgiving there are thousands of people at our southern border who do appreciate what we have and for what they long for and want to be part of. They came a thousand miles on only the hope that they may be admitted in this country. These people have fled poverty, rampant crime and political corruption. This caravan of people can serve as a powerful reminder to us of how fortunate we are and what we have to be thankful for. Nobody can blame others to want a better life. We also have to remember that North America cannot solve the over population in the world, it is no longer an empty continent with huge areas of lands to develop, neither does it have finances or resources to care for such a huge influx of people.

We tend to look at the glass as half empty rather than half full. Of course we have hunger, hurricanes, fires and other problems here, but in this country there is a concerned government that provides the necessary help in emergencies. After every election there are disappointed people with the election results, but neither did many of these same people bother to vote.

Turnout at election times have always been less than 50%. Whether they are too lazy, ignorant or unconcerned about government who knows. We can ask the people at our borders what they would give for the opportunity to vote, and express their anger at the administration without reprisal from the government.

Most of us are fortunate enough to have families, a good home, jobs, nice neighborhoods which are only a dream to so many others. We give thanks to our veterans, internal (police, firemen, etc.) as well as the external combat veterans. With all our problems there is love and patriotism in our country. Love holds so much power, it multiplies happiness and divides sorrow in one step. Our nation still embodies the Norman Rockwell four freedoms (freedom of speech, religion, from fear, from want) as well as the vote, and others. We are so blessed in this country which deserves more patriotism than seems to be shown. We live in a land of plenty and generosity. There is so much to give thanks for, one day of thanks is hardly an adequate reminder for all the blessings that our country affords and all we should be thankful for.
