Two Wheeling men, following a traffic stop in Buffalo Grove Saturday, June 1, were arrested after police say officers recovered a gun reported stolen 50 years ago.

The driver, Rafael Rodriguez Jr., 20, of the 1500 block of Sanders Court, was stopped for alleged speeding on Buffalo Grove Road near Bernard Drive in Buffalo Grove. Further investigation resulted in Rodriguez being taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).

Eduardo A. Leon, 18, of the 1200 block of Mae Court, was identified as the passenger in the vehicle. Subsequent to Rodriguez being taken into custody for DUI, a .22-caliber revolver was recovered from the vehicle, police said.

The firearm, according to police, was found to contain seven spent cartridges in the eight-round chamber. A computer check revealed the gun was stolen out of Detroit in 1969.

According to police, Leon stated the gun was his, but he did not have a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card or a Concealed Carry License (CCL).

Leon was charged with one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon-no FOID/CCL. His court date is June 28. Rodriguez was charged with speeding and DUI. His next court date is July 9.
