Doug Ghim Competes In U.S. Open

 

Arlington Heights native and Buffalo Grove High School alum Doug Ghim was a far way from home competing in the 118th U.S. Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (Southampton, NY) June 11-17. Ghim shot 79-84 — 153 to miss the cut, despite tying former No. 1 ranked golfer Adam Scott at 13-over-par. Ghim missed the cut, but so did a number of the top golfers in the world including Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia to name a few. Ghim was named the Ben Hogan Award winner this year for the best male college golfer. He turned pro before the Travelers Championship that finished Sunday, June 24 in Cromwell, CT. In his first pro event, Ghim shot 78-70 — 148 to miss the cut in a highly competitive field in the Travelers Championship.

 

Locals Struggle In Western Junior

 

Six Journal-area golfers competed in the 101st Western Junior Championship at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie June 18-21, but none of them were in contention for the win at the prestigious golf event. Loyola Academy golfers Ryan Savarie (120th place; 75-75 — 150), Chip Savarie (140th; 76-78 — 154), Peter Radler (142nd; 77-78 — 155), Reb Banas (142nd; 74-81 — 155) and Connor Prassas (142nd; 78-77 — 155) all finished outside of the top 100. St. Viator’s Nolan Doherty, of Arlington Heights, finished tied for 134th after shooting 75-78 — 153. The event was shortened by rain, handing the win to Carmel, IN native Jeff Doty.

 

Palatine Native Wins Rain-Shortened 99th CDGA Amateur Championship

 

Chadd Slutzky, who resides in Palatine, shot 8-under-par 134 (66-68) to win the 99th Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) Amateur Championship at Brairwood Country Club in Deerfield after rain shortened the event. Jackson Bussell, the defending individual IHSA state champion from Stevenson, shot 70-73 — 143 to tie for 10th place. Payton Kim (Fremd HS/Bryant University) shot 75-69 — 144 to tie for 13th place with two others, including Maine West alum Michael Fastert (69-75). A number of other golfers with Journal-area ties competed in the prestigious meet, including Grant Gavin (Arlington Heights/Prospect HS), Spencer Crowe (Loyola Academy) and Jack McGuire (Park Ridge/Loyola) to name a few.

 

Successful Showing For Locals At Jr. PGA Championship Qualifier

 

Emily Duan (Buffalo Grove) shot 2-under-par 70 at Pine Meadow Golf Club in Mundelein Saturday to tie Hinsdale’s Roshannah Gaur for the win to qualify for the 2018 Girls Jr. PGA Championship at Kearney Hills Golf Links in Lexington, KY, July 9-12. Only the top two qualify for the national event, meaning both will qualify to face the best junior golfers around the nation. Journal natives Maria Perakis (Glenview/Glenbrook South), Kelly Dong (Buffalo Grove), Catherine Reisinger (Park Ridge/St. Viator) and Hanna Tanaka (Glenview/Glenbrook South) all competed, but didn’t advance. Over 10 boys golfers from the Journal-area tried to qualify, but none were able to make the cut. Mark Noonan (Stevenson) was the top Journal golfer after tying for 9th place after shooting 1-under-par 71.

 

Kavanagh Places Second At MAJGT Northern Illinois Classic

 

Prospect High School rising junior Kelly Kavanagh, of Arlington Heights, had a great showing Monday-Tuesday, June 18-19 at Kishwaukee Country Club in DeKalb by finishing second for the girls age 12-18 division. Kavanagh shot 72-76 — 148 to finish four strokes behind champion Megan Furtney, of South Elgin. There were 22 golfers competing in the division, including Glenview’s Shea Graf (17th place; 96-85 — 181).
