Here’s a look at some of the recent golf action involving Journal-area golfers:
Illinois Women’s Open:
The 36-hole championship for women’s golfers was held Monday-Tuesday, July 25-26 at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville. Only four Journal-area golfers were among the 60 competitors to make it all 36 holes. Buffalo Grove native Haeri Lee (73-77 — 150) finished tied for 11th as the highest finishing area golfer. The Buffalo Grove alum recently finished her senior season at Drake University, where she earned All-Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) honors. Loyola Academy rising junior Katie Magner (82-81 — 163) finished 37th, while 2013 Buffalo Grove alum Grace Kil (87-77 — 164) tied for 38th. Loyola Academy rising senior Bailey Bitbabo (83-89 — 172) tied for 53rd. Mundelein’s Jaravee Boonchant won the tournament by shooting 70-67 — 137, a stellar 7-under-par.
Illinois State Mid-Amateur Qualifier:
The 18-hole CDGA event at Palatine Hills Golf Course (par 72) was held Tuesday, July 26, where the top 22 golfers (top 15, plus seven extra due to a tie) qualified for the Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship Aug. 22-23 at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie. Only two Journal-area golfers qualified out of the at least eight that attempted. Mount Prospect’s Ryan Kowalski (Prospect HS/Methodist University) tied for fifth after shooting even par 72. Northfield’s Steve Sawtell, a St. Viator alum in the 1980s, tied for eighth at 1-over-par 73 to also qualify. Missing the cut were Arlington Heights’ Nick Albu (7-over-par 79), Prospect Heights’ Conor O’Grady (7-over-par 79), Glenview’s Taylor Brinkman (9-over-par 81), Glenview’s Ryan Skaggs (9-over-par 81), Mount Prospect’s Nicholas Pane (10-over-par 82) and Glenview’s James Trankina (11-over-par 83). A total of 74 golfers completed the 18-hole event.
Glencoe Stroke Play Event:
The Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) hosted its 37th 18-hole playing members event of the season Thursday, July 28 at Glencoe Golf Club in Glencoe and Journal-area golfers showed great strength. Andrew Southwell (Glencoe/Loyola Academy ‘25) shot 5-over-par 77 to win the boys 14-15 age division. Jack Duffer (Arlington Heights/Rolling Meadows HS) finished third at 8-over-par 80 and Jiro Yamat (Niles/Maine East) placed fourth at 10-over-par 82. Buffalo Grove native Trenton Kurtz also just missed the top 10, tying for 11th (out of 26 golfers) at 16-over-par 88. In the boys 16-18 division, Moises Martinez (Arlington Heights/Hersey) led the way for the area golfers in second place at 3-over-par 75. Joey Pieracci (Glenview/Loyola Academy) finished third at 4-over-par 76, while Patrick Rocchio (Winnetka/Loyola Academy) tied for fourth with two others at 6-over-par 78. Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Glenview, Park Ridge and Wheeling also had golfers in the boys 16-18 division that finished between 15th-32nd. The boys golfers weren’t the only ones having success. Palatine native Keira Brazeau won the girls 14-15 age group at 6-over-par 79. Glenview’s Sonam Konanahalli was third (13-over-par 83) and Des Plaines’ Lily Zicarelli (St. Viator) was fifth (18-over-par 91). In the girls 16-18 age division, Loyola Academy golfers Katie Magner (Winnetka; 7-over-par 80) and Gigi Zera (Glenview; 11-over-par 84) finished second and third. Glenview’s Olivia Kim was fifth at 18-over-par 91 and Wheeling native Charlotte Adler tied for seventh at 22-over-par 95.
Youth Development Program at Heritage Oaks:
While a number of large events are going on, there are still youth golf events happening in the area as summer begins to wrap up. One event was an 18-hole Youth Development Program (YDP) event at Heritage Oaks in Northbrook Monday, Aug. 1. In the girls 12-13 age division, Arlington Heights’ Jennifer March won the event with ease, shooting 1-over-par 71 to win by 7 strokes. She hit 3 birdies on the back nine. Buffalo Grove’s Ava Alimissis was fourth (12-over-par 82) and fellow Buffalo Grove native Samviti Mohanty tied for eighth (21-over-par 91). In the boys 12-13 age group, Glenview’s Eli Kim finished fourth at 11-over-par 81 to lead the area golfers. Arlington Heights natives Colin Lockwood and David Lockwood tied for sixth with Buffalo Grove’s Andy Gao at 17-over-par 87. Arlington Heights’ Nicholas Riley just missed the top 10 by a little, finishing tied for 15th at 21-over-par 91. In the boys 10-11 age division, Roselle’s Nick Ratini won with 1-under-par 69. Park Ridge’s Daniel Lulkiewicz tied for 10th at 27-over-par 97 to be the highest Journal-area golfer.
Other Golf Nuggets:
* In the Al McClean Junior Open Wednesday, July 27 at Wilmette Golf Club, three Journal-area boys golfers finished in the top five of the boys 14-15 age division. Kevin Schuh (Glenview/Glenbrook South) was second at 7-over-par 77. Seamus Purcell (Winnetka/Loyola Academy) was tied for third and Antonio Gutierrez (Elk Grove/Conant) was fifth. In the girls 14-15 age division, Palatine’s Keira Brazeau tied for the win at 10-over-par 80. Glenview’s Sonam Konanahalli (3rd), Palatine’s Merritt Bell (6th) and Glenview’s Abbey Rieske (8th) all finished in the top 10. In the boys 16-18 division, Joey Pieracci (Glenview/Loyola) finished tied for second at 3-over-par 73. In the girls 16-18 division, Katie Magner (Winnetka/Loyola) won the meet at 6-over-par 76. Her Loyola teammate Gigi Zera (Glenview) was fourth with an 83.
* In the Players Challenge at Whitetail Ridge in Yorkville Wednesday-Thursday, July 27-28, the top area golfer was Chase Blanchard (Glenview/Glenbrook South), who shot 72-70 — 142 to finish runner-up out of 68 golfers. Patrick Raupp (Arlington Heights/Prospect HS) finished ninth and Connor Woodin (Arlington Heights/Buffalo Grove HS) tied for 10th to round out the area’s top golfers. On the girls side, Sadie Zorrilla (Elk Grove Village/Conant) was the top area golfer in sixth after shooting 74-83 — 157. Zorrilla was second after the first round, but struggled in the second round.
* In the YDP event Thursday, July 28 at River Bend in Lisle, Elk Grove native Chase Perez won the boys 8-9 division by shooting 6-over-par 43 in the 9-hole competition. In the girls 12-13 division, Elk Grove native Madeline Gutierrez was second at 3-over-par 40.
* In the YDP 9-hole event at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Niles Friday, July 29, Arlington Heights native David Lockwood tied for the boys 12-13 age division win at 5-over-par 38. His brother Colin Lockwood (Arlington Heights) was third at 6-over-par 39, while Mount Prospect’s Liam Shanahan was tied for fourth at 7-over-par 40.
