Here’s a look at girls basketball action in the Journal-area from Monday-Sunday, March 1-7:

 

Sunday, March 7

 

Loyola Academy 49, Lincoln-Way West 40: Loyola (16-2) was led by Angelina Giordano (13 points, 4 rebounds), Summer Parker-Hall (11 pts., 8 rebounds) and Arielle Dabu (11 pts.) in a win over the defending state runner-up in Class 4A. The game was part of the Morton College Shootout, placing some of the top teams in the state against each other since there is no state series this year.

Simeon 64, Maine South 62: Maine South (10-3, 7-0 CSL South) was so close to knocking off Class 3A’s No. 1 team Simeon (7-0), but dropped the game late. The Hawks led 62-54 with 3:48 to play, but Simeon closed on a 10-0 run to lead 64-62. Maine South’s Niamh Gardiner (15 pts.) was fouled with 2.9 seconds left as she shot a 3-pointer. With three chances at the line, she was unable to sink the first two and missed the last on purpose in hopes her team could rebound and tie, but Simeon grabbed the rebound to end the game. Ellie Ronan (16 points) and Emily Pape (14 pts., 7 rebounds) also led Maine South with Gardiner. 

Resurrection 47, Regina Dominican 36: Regina fell behind early against Resurrection and wab unable to recover. Resurrection led 22-13 at half and 38-24 after three quarters. Regina was led by Laura Strenk (10 points, 5 rebounds) and Mia Krebs (7 pts.).

 

Saturday, March 6

 

Maine West 56, Niles North 16: After starting the year 2-2, Maine West (10-2, 8-0 CSL North) has turned things around with eight straight wins. The Warriors won their 50th straight CSL North game dating back to their last conference loss to Niles North Jan. 28, 2016. Maine West went 10-0 in CSL North play in each of the last four seasons. The Warriors led 18-2 after one quarter and 33-6 at half. West extended the lead to 50-12 heading into the fourth. Maine West was led by Jade Thomas (20 points, 14 rebounds), Jaclyn Riedl (17 pts., 6 rebounds, 2 blocks), Abby Becker (4 pts.), Mahogany Shaw (4 pts.) and Brianna Hernandez (2 pts., 7 assists). Nine different players scored for the Warriors.

Christian Liberty Academy 56, South Beloit 34: Christian Liberty (10-0) was able to get almost everyone in the scorebook in a dominating win over South Beloit. The Chargers, who won 38 of their last 39 games, had nine of their 13 players score in the win. Leading CLA was Melissa Castro (13 points), Audrey Law (11 pts.) and Julia Wolke (10 pts.). Christian Liberty led 21-5 after one quarter and 36-13 at half. CLA extended the lead to 45-21 after three quarters.

Glenbrook South 38, Niles West 27: Glenbrook South swept the weekend over Niles West with help from Anna Rosenberger (11 points).

Loyola Academy 55, Mother McAuley 37: Loyola (15-2, 7-1) was led by Summer Parker-Hall (19 points) to keep the great season going..

Maine South 71, Glenbrook North 20: Maine South (10-2, 7-0) remain unbeaten in the CSL South with a win over Glenbrook North. The Hawks were led by Emily Pape (12 points), Caroline Barker (10 pts.) and Ellie Ronan (10 pts.).  

Grayslake Central 55, Palatine 37: Grayslake Central jumped out to a 21-3 lead Saturday morning over host Palatine and the Pirates were unable to recover. Palatine outscored Grayslake Central 19-10 in the second quarter and entered the fourth down 39-30. The Pirates were outscored 16-7 in the final quarter to put away any comeback hopes. Palatine made only 2-of-17 shots from beyond the arc. Palatine, playing without stars Madi Stark and Kayla Miotk, was led by Olivia Riley (16 points, 13 rebounds), Laura Seeberger (6 pts.) and Payton Westphal (6 pts.). Grayslake Central was led by Piper Gallaher (22 pts., 8 rebounds).

Marist 54, St. Viator 41: The tough run for St. Viator (7-4, 4-3 ESCC) continued with their third straight loss against a stellar team. Marist (10-1) is ranked No. 5 in Class 4A in the most recent AP poll. The Lions, the No. 10 Class 3A team, lost to ranked Class 4A team’s No. 3 Benet Wednesday and No. 2 Stevenson Thursday. St. Viator played No. 8 Libertyville Monday. Leading the Lions were Joy Bergstrom (20 points, 2 rebounds), Nora Ahram (8 pts., 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal) and Emma Morrisey (6 pts., 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals). Marist led 20-13 after one quarter and 33-20 at half. St. Viator closed in during the third quarter by outscoring Marist 15-11, but the Lions ran out of gas in the fourth.

Prospect 57, Barrington 54: Prospect (9-4, 7-2 MSL East) knocked off Barrington (9-3) in the MSL crossover battle for their fourth straight win. Prospect plays Wheeling Tuesday in the final MSL East game of the season. The Knights also play Palatine Friday, March 12 in the final MSL crossover game.

Friday, March 5

 

Maine West 59, Niles North 22: Jaclyn Riedl (17 points, 6 rebounds), Brianna Hernandez (15 pts., 3 assists) and Mahogany Shaw (13 pts.) led Maine West to a blowout win over Niles North. The Warriors raced out to a 24-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. West led 37-16 at half and 53-22 after three quarters. Niles North was held scoreless in the fourth. The Warriors shot 23-of-45 overall, including 14-of-28 in the first half.

Hersey 72, Buffalo Grove 37: No. 1 Hersey (13-0, 9-0 MSL East) dropped another 32-point quarter, this one coming in the first quarter as the Huskies built an early 32-2 lead. Katy Eidle (17 points, 4 assists, 3 steals), Mary McGrath (19 pts., 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals) and Mary Kate Fahey (14 pts., 4 rebounds, 6 assists) scored 24 of their combined 50 points in the first quarter of the game for Hersey. Eidle had 11 points, McGrath had 7 points and Fahey had 6 points in the opening quarter. Six other players scored for the Huskies in the win as they combined for the remaining 22 points. Hersey led 43-14 at half and 67-28 after three quarters. The Huskies scored a combined 56 points in the first and third quarters. Buffalo Grove was led by Cassidy Green (12 pts.), Kora Kipley (7 pts.) and Kim Stuercke (5 pts.). Every one of the Bison’s eight players scored in the losing effort.

Fremd 53, Schaumburg 21: Fremd improved to 9-0 in MSL West action with a win over Schaumburg. The Vikings were led by Ruthie Montella (17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals), Grace LaBarge (12 pts., 4 3-pointers), Maddy Fay (10 pts., 5 rebounds) and Norah O’Brien (9 pts.). Fremd won 52-19 in their earlier matchup with the Saxons.

Palatine 52, Hoffman Estates 38: Palatine won on senior night, though it was junior Madi Stark (15 points, 6 assists, 4 steals) leading the way. Kayla Miotk (9 pts., 12 rebounds), Olivia Riley (8 pts., 11 rebounds, 3 assists) and Frankie Henderson (6 pts., 2 rebounds) were also solid contributors in the win. Most of Hoffman Estates scoring came from Ashley Oliver, who dropped a game-high 23 points. The Pirates led 13-5 after one quarter and 27-14 at half. 

Glenbrook South 44, Niles West 28: Glenbrook South picked up a CSL South win over Niles West after strong play from Sidney Rogers (17 points) and Eden Frick (11 pts.).

Barrington 58, Conant 28: Barrington (9-2, 8-1 MSL West) was led by Sophie Swanson (26 points) and Laura Mahlum (11 pts., 15 rebounds). Conant was led by Emily Ytsen with 11 points.

Maine South 64, Glenbrook North 31: Maine South (9-2, 6-0 CSL South) ran through Glenbrook North, more than doubling up the Spartans. The Hawks were led by Emily Pape (14 points) and Nicole Gardiner (10 pts.).

Elk Grove 39, Wheeling 13: Elk Grove (3-8, 2-7 MSL East) won the penultimate conference game of the season over Wheeling (0-10, 0-9), which is still looking for its first win of the year.

Thursday, March 4

 

St. Laurence 59, Regina Dominican 48: Regina (1-4) fell behind 25-11 after one quarter and star Laura Strenk found herself in early foul trouble and had to sit 7 minutes of the second quarter. She was able to finish strong in the fourth, scoring 8 of her 10 points to bring her career total to 1,001 points. Strenk is believed to be just the third Panthers player to score 1,000 points in their career, joining Lauren Schober and Christina Quayle. Strenk made her 1,000th point with just 12 seconds left in the game. St. Laurence was on fire shooting, making 11-of-14 from beyond the arc to pick Regina apart. St. Laurence led 34-18 at half and 48-27 after three quarters. The Panthers outscored them 21-11 in the fourth, but the damage was already done.

Christian Liberty 59, Parkview Christian Academy 43: Christian Liberty (9-0) continued its magical run over the last two seasons with their 37th win in the last 38 games. Melissa Castro (19 points) led the Chargers along with Julia Wolke (15 pts.) and Audrey Law (13 pts.).

Loyola Academy 45, Mother McAuley 40: Loyola improved to 14-2 overall this season and 6-1 in conference play as they knocked off McAuley (2-7). Loyola also won the first game of the year that McAuley played them, topping them 63-56.

Wednesday, March 3

 

Libertyville 61, Stevenson 46: No. 2 Stevenson (11-1, 6-1 NSC) was dealt its first loss of the season and it came in the North Suburban Conference championship game. No. 8 Libertyville (12-2, 7-0 NSC) was able to jump out to an early 16-11 first quarter lead and extended it to 33-22 at half. The Patriots outscored the Wildcats 15-14 in the third, but they were outscored 14-9 in the fourth for their first loss of the season. Stevenson honored its senior class before the game, which included Nikki Ware (8 pts.), Lydia Lueck (2 pts.), Akiko Uchida, Madeline Rosenbaum and Carly King. The Patriots were led by juniors Simone Sawyer (18 points) and Ava Bardic (9 pts.) in the losing effort. Sawyer is at 1,085 career points and recently passed WNBA legend Tamika Catchings (1,060 points) for No. 9 on the all-time scoring list at Stevenson. No. 8 Sophia Way (1,122 points) is next on the list. Libertyville was led by Morgan Spaulding (19 pts.), Emily Fisher (17 pts.) and Marianna Morrissey (15 pts.). Stevenson won the first meeting of the year, 62-52.

Regina Dominican 48, Amundsen 36: Regina finally returned to the court after two weeks off and the rust showed a little to start the game. Amundsen led 10-5 after one quarter and 17-16 at half, before the Panthers went on the prowl. Regina pounced for 20 points in the third, while allowing just 10 to take a 36-27 lead heading into the fourth. The Panthers outscored Amundsen 12-9 in the fourth to secure a 12-point win. Laura Strenk (11 points, 10 assists, 6 rebounds, 6 steals) struggled shooting at points of the game, but still led the Panthers in scoring and brought her career total to 991 points. The Panthers had 10 different players score out of the 12 who took a shot. Reganne French (8 pts., 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 4 deflections) also was a solid contributor.

Maine South 61, Glenbrook South 36: Maine South (8-2, 5-0 CSL South) remained undefeated in conference play with help from Emily Pape (24 points, 12 rebounds), Nicole Gardiner (9 pts.) and Niamh Gardiner (8 pts., 7 rebounds). Glenbrook South was led by Marina Markovic (12 pts.) and Eden Frick (12 pts.).

Benet Academy 40, St. Viator 39: No. 10 (3A) St. Viator (7-2, 4-2 ESCC) pushed No. 3 (4A) Benet Academy (9-0) to the limit, but fell just short late in the fourth quarter. The Lions led 12-6 after one quarter and maintained a 20-17 lead at half. Benet outscored St. Viator 11-6 in the third to grab a 28-26 lead heading into the fourth. St. Viator outscored Benet 13-12 in the fourth, but fell just short. St. Viator was led by Emma Morrisey (10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist), Joy Bergstrom (10 pts., 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 steals), Mia Bergstrom (9 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block) and Nora Ahram (6 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal).

Tuesday, March 2

 

Maine West 57, Glenbrook South 48 (2 OT): Jane Rothweiler (17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) and Jaclyn Riedl (17 pts., 7 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists) combined for 34 points to help Maine West knock off a Glenbrook South squad that wanted to prove themselves. Glenbrook South led 8-7 after one quarter and West grabbed a 23-22 lead at half. The Titans went up 37-30 after three quarters, but Maine West forced OT with a great fourth quarter. Riedl scored at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. Glenbrook South made just 3-of-10 free throws from the fourth quarter and to the end of the second overtime. West made 14-of-18 free throws in the same span. Jade Thomas (12 pts., 8 rebounds) and Angelina Ocampo (5 pts., 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 block) were also strong for Maine West. Leading Glenbrook South were Eden Frick (17 points), Sidney Rogers (10 pts.) and Marina Markovic (8 pts.).

Barrington 57, Palatine 50 (OT): Palatine (6-5, 4-4 MSL West) led Barrington for most of the game, including 36-27 in the fourth quarter. Palatine was still in a good spot, up 39-33 in the fourth, but Barrington outscored the Pirates 10-4 to close out regulation tied 43-43. The Fillies opened overtime on a 9-0 run to lead 52-43, before Palatine closed within 54-50. Unfortunately for Palatine, that was all they could muster as Barrington pulled off the comeback win. Palatine led 12-9 after one, 22-18 at half and 32-25 entering the fourth. Madi Stark (28 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) had a career game on 10-of-15 shooting. Megan Van Brunt (7 pts., 8 rebounds, 3 steals) and Kayla Miotk (5 pts., 6 rebounds) also contributed for the Pirates. When it came to free throws, both Palatine (12-of-31) and Barrington (16-of-30) struggled mightily. Barrington was led by Molly O’Riordan (22 pts.), Laura Mahlum (14 pts.) and Gwen Adler (10 pts.).

Hersey 66, Elk Grove 29: Katy Eidle (20 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) and Mary McGrath (20 pts., 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists, 3 blocks) led the undefeated Huskies in another runaway victory. Avery Larson (8 pts., 9 rebounds, 4 assists), Mary Kate Fahey (7 pts., 6 assists) and Valerie Allen (6 pts., 5 rebounds, 4 blocks) were also solid contributors for Hersey (12-0, 8-0 MSL East). The Huskies had 9 blocks on defense.

Maine South 62, Highland Park 18: Maine South (7-2) picked up a CSL crossover win over Highland Park with ease. Margaret Mizwicki (10 points) and Evelyn O’Leary (9 pts.) each had their best game of the season as Maine South powered past the Giants.

Rolling Meadows 43, Wheeling 16: Rolling Meadows (9-2) tried to get everyone involved in a win over a developing Wheeling squad. The Mustangs were led by Alison Sellergren (7 points, 4 rebounds), Emily Galvan (7 pts., 2 assists, 2 steals), Nicole Davis (6 pts., 5 steals), Sam Elenz (4 pts., 8 reb., 4 assists), Maddie Paddack (4 pts., 2 reb., 2 assists), Moira Hickey (3 pts., 3 reb., 2 steals), Roisin Grandberry (3 pts., 2 reb.), Olivia Dizonno (3 pts.), Emily Romanacce (2 pts., 3 reb.) and Madi Niedbala (2 pts., 2 reb.). Rolling Meadows led 11-2 after one quarter and 31-9 at half. Wheeling was led by Marlena Miloucheva (6 pts.) and Sara Aranda (5 pts.).

Prospect 54, Buffalo Grove 32: Eliot Dojutrek (12 points) and Mia Gusloff (11 pts., 8 rebounds) led a balanced scoring effort for Prospect (7-4) in a big MSL East win over the Bison. Nine players scored in total for the Knights, including Andie Will (9 pts., 3 3-pointers, 8 assists, 4 steals, 10 deflections). Prospect’s Jenna Acosta (8 rebounds), Summer Srodulski (8 rebounds) and Gusloff combined for 24 rebounds. Macy Zei led Prospect with 5 steals.

Niles West 47, Niles North 23: Niles West proved to be the top Dist. 219 school in the CSL crossover battle Tuesday. Albi Ahmeti (15 points) led the Wolves as one of eight different scorers.

Fremd 50, Conant 20: Fremd jumped out to a 10-2 lead after a quarter and maintained a 17-12 lead at half, before pulling away in the third quarter by outscoring the Cougars 20-2. Fremd (9-1) was led by Grace LaBarge (11 points), Ruthie Montella (10 pts.), Maddy Fay (10 pts.), Kate Beckemeier (5 pts.) and Brynn Eshoo (5 pts.). Conant was led by Emily Ytsen (7 pts.) and Liv Czarny (6 pts.).

Proviso East 48, Leyden 46: Leyden had the game in the first half, outscoring Proviso East 27-17, but the Eagles fell apart in the second half and were outscored 31-19, including 15-10 in the fourth. Leyden led 46-43 with under a minute to play, but Proviso hit a 3-pointer to tie it with 50 seconds to go. Proviso East scored with 4 seconds left after grabbing a rebound from a missed free throw. Becky Colmenares (16 points) and Sierra Gibson (10 pts.) led the Eagles.
