Girls Basketball Roundup: Maine West Moves To 10-0

GBS Drops 1st Game

Here’s a look at recent Journal-area girls basketball action:

 

Tuesday, Dec. 4

 

Maine West 72, Highland Park 33: Angela Dugalic (16 points, 3 steals), Rachel Kent (13 pts., 4 rebounds, 3 steals), Jocelyn Jacob (12 pts., 2 steals) and Dylan Van Fleet (11 pts., 4 steals) led a balanced offense to help Maine West (10-0, 2-0 CSL North) remain undefeated this season. The Warriors recorded 19 steals on defense. Kent moved into eighth place on the Warriors all-time scoring list with 1,318 points, surpassing Julie Just (1,308 pts.). Kent is 14 points from tying Nancy Kennelly (1,332 pts.). She is also quickly closing in on No. 5 Dawn Vana (1,385) and No. 6 Brittany Begrowicz (1,361). Maine West led 28-9 after one quarter and 43-26 at half. After allowing 7 points in the third quarter, Maine West shutout the Giants in the final quarter. Ten different Warriors scored in the win.

Maine East 55, Glenbrook North 50: Maine East (2-6, 1-1 CSL North) finally snapped its 11-game CSL North losing streak with a surprise win over Glenbrook North. It was the first conference win since topping GBN on Feb. 10, 2017. The Spartans beat Maine East 69-37 and 43-17 a year ago in their two conference games. Earlier this year, GBN beat East 56-43 in the Blue Demons’ Thanksgiving Tournament. Caya Apostolou (20 points, 8-for-9 FT), Colleen Oribello (12 pts.) and freshman Mahima Chokshi (10 pts.) led Maine East. The Blue Demons also received contributions from Emina Hanic (5 pts., 6 rebounds) and Teresa Barbera (7 rebounds). Maine East made 19-of-27 free throws to help secure the win.

Evanston 68, Glenbrook South 52: Glenbrook South was dealt its first loss of the season after starting the year 8-0. Evanston (8-1) was led by Tyler Mayne (14 points). The Titans (8-1) were led by Kristin Ralston (14 pts.), Libbie Vanderveen (13 pts., 6 rebounds, 3 assists) and Makayla Stadler (12 pts., 10 rebounds, 2 steals). GBS shot 20-for-26 from the free throw line.

Rolling Meadows 56, Batavia 46: Lily Greifenstein (19 points) and Alexa Davis (14 pts.) helped Rolling Meadows (9-1) overcome an early deficit to win its ninth game in 10 tries this season. “Lily Greifenstein hit some big shots down the stretch and Mallory Brand (7 pts., 2 3-pointers) played great, impacting the game on both ends,” Rolling Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky said. The Mustangs trailed 15-14 after one quarter, but turned the game around in the second quarter, outscoring Batavia 15-6 to lead 29-21 at half. The Mustangs held on the rest of the way for the win. Batavia was led by Erin Golden with 21 points.

Resurrection 53, St. Joseph 43: Madison Dorband (16 points), Gabby O’Hehir (13 pts.) and Kellie Forrestal (13 pts.) led Resurrection (5-3) to the home victory. The Bandits took 5 charges in the game and 11 over the last three games.

Leyden 64, Morton 47: Leyden picked up some much needed change in momentum to improve to 4-2 overall this season. Jamyah Tate (20 points), Evelyn Abundes (17 pts.), Gabriela Hurtado (14 pts.) and Yarizta Frias (11 pts.) led the Eagles offense.

St. Viator 63, Conant 43: St. Viator (7-1) won its third straight game after starting out on fire. The Lions led 20-9 after one quarter and 39-17 at half. Conant showed some life in the third quarter, scoring 15 points, only to be outdone by St. Viator’s 19. St. Viator was led by Nora Ahram (18 points, 4 3-pointers, 1 steal), Emma Morrisey (10 pts., 2 rebounds, 3 assists), Joy Bergstrom (9 pts., 2 rebounds, 2 assists) and Elise Horbach (9 pts., 1 steal). The Lions made 13-of-25 shots from beyond the arc. Stephanie Mazurek led Conant (2-6) with 19 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Through eight games, St. Viator has scored 484 points and 231 of those have come from the combined total of freshmen Bergstrom and Ahram.

Willows Academy 46, Woodlands Academy 38: Molly Murray dropped 25 points to lead Willows Academy (9-1) to the Eagles ninth straight win. The Eagles now have surpassed last year’s win total (8-17) in 10 games, with plenty of games left on the schedule to add on.

Regina Dominican 31, St. Laurence 23: Regina earned its first divisional conference win in two years after a strong showing on defense. The Panthers led 16-4 at half and extended their lead to 26-10 after three quarters. Regina was outscored 13-5 in the fourth quarter, but the damage was done. Laura Strenk (10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists), Kaitlyn Byrne (9 pts.) and Isa Krebs (5 pts.).

Niles West 31, Niles North 23: Niles West improved to 6-2 this season with a win over rival Niles North. The Wolves led the low scoring game 21-17 after three quarters, but pulled away in the end. Sam Galanopoulos (13 points) and Nerina Alic (9 pts.) led the Wolves in scoring.

Mother McAuley 33, Loyola 27: Mother McAuley (9-0), the No. 1 ranked team in state by maxpreps.com, narrowly held Loyola (7-2) off to remain undefeated this season. The Ramblers have lost two in a row after starting the year 7-0.

Monday, Dec. 3

Buffalo Grove 46, Schaumburg 19: Buffalo Grove (4-4) was led by Kendra Lee (14 points, 4 rebounds), Alyssa Ramos (12 pts., 5 rebounds), Macy Floro (7 pts.) and Megan Fontanetta (6 pts.) in a much needed win to give the Bison a boost after losing four in a row entering.
