Fremd Softball Can’t Knock Off No. 1 SCN

No. 4 Fremd (24-10) softball was hoping to upend No. 1 St. Charles North (23-6), but the Vikings fell just short despite a great battle 8-7 in the sectional semifinals Tuesday, May 30.

Avery Sadorf (2-for-3, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 R) and Ryanne Goodwin (1-for-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R) combined to drive in 6 runs for Fremd, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the victory.

Mia Souliotis (1-for-3, 1 R), Hailey Lucas (1-for-4), Sydney Sheedy (1-for-3), Chiara D’Antonio (2 R) and Taylor Piento (1 R) also contributed for the Vikings in the loss.

Lauren Graham was strong all season, but struggled in the loss as she allowed 9 hits, 8 runs (3 earned) and struck out 2 in 3.1 innings, before she was pulled. Lucas (2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 8 K, 0 BB) was untouchable in relief, but the damage had already been done.

Fremd scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning, but St. Charles North scored 3 runs apiece in the bottom of the first and second to take a 6-2 lead. Neither team scored in the third, but Fremd came out swinging in the top of the fourth and added 3 runs to cut the deficit to 6-5. North responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Fremd wasn’t going to quit. The Vikings added 2 runs in the top of the fifth, but unfortunately that was all the scoring they could muster over the final three innings.

Fremd outscored its opponents 223-115 this season. The highlight of the year was winning their 900th game in program history, topping Palatine for the milestone Friday, April 21. They will enter next season with 913 wins all-time.
