The pilot of a small aircraft that went down in Palatine Thursday, Sept. 17 had to react quickly in order to avoid harming anyone on the ground when he landed.

The landing occurred between Northwest Highway and Colfax Avenue in the 500 block of N. Quentin Road at approximately 6:11 p.m., Palatine police said.

According to Chicago Executive Airport Director Jamie Abbott, the pilot, who also owned the plane, took off from the airport in Wheeling a short time before, but radioed that he was having engine trouble. He requested to return to the airport (about 10 miles away) when he realized he was in trouble.

After making the emergency landing, he was able to exit the plane uninjured.

The plane suffered  damage to the right wing. Abbott said the single-engine aircraft was eventually placed on a flatbed, towed to the airport and left inside a hangar.

“We will wait for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to come out and make a determination (on the cause),” Abbott said, adding a report will likely be ready in a couple of months.

The FAA did not respond to the scene since no one was injured, the Journal was told.

“We will work with the aircraft owner to determine what to do with the plane,” Abbott added.

Southbound Quentin Road was closed between Northwest Highway and Colfax while police investigated.
