Elk Grove Village cut ribbons marking the opening of two new fire stations in May 2019. At Tuesday’s (April 14) village board meeting, trustees awarded $2.086 million in contracts for renovations on a third firehouse.

A professional services contract to oversee renovations at Fire Station No. 7, located at 101 Biesterfield Rd., was awarded to Nicholas & Associates. In 2017 village trustees awarded Nicholas & Associates a contract to act as the construction manager on the project.

Village memos said Nicholas will also be responsible for architecture, design and administering trade packages to subcontractors out of its fee. The company will then earn 11.5% of the total project cost as the construction management fee, estimated to be $197,579.

Renovations would include updating and modernizing the station and making renovations and repairs to roofing, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, Mayor Craig Johnson said.

Village officials opened eight sealed trade bid packages totaling $1.7 million. The remaining budget includes the $197,000 construction management fee, $93,000 for the fixed general conditions budget, and reimbursable expenses budgeted at $77,500, village records show.

Johnson said the project would not be a total renovation of the station. He said firefighters would continue working out of Station No. 7 during renovations and would not need to be placed in temporary quarters.

Although he did not give a timeline for the project, Johnson said he would like to see work begin as soon as possible and be completed before the end of the year.

The fire station is part of the Charles Zettek Municipal Center which includes village hall, police department and fire station.

The fire station was built in the 1980s and saw its last renovation and modernization about 15 years ago, just before a project which saw a nearly complete renovation of the rest of the municipal center in 2009, Johnson said.
