DPPL Offers Free Digital Conversion Services

A new station on the fourth floor of the Des Plaines Public Library allows users to convert old VHS tapes and DVDs into digital files for free.

Heather Imhoff, head of information services for the library, said staff decided to create the Digital Conversion Station due to frequent inquiries from patrons about digital conversion services.

“Everyone seems to need to do this these days,” she told the Journal & Topics.

Having film or VHS tapes converted to digital files can cost over $30 at businesses such as Walgreens, and purchasing conversion devices can costs hundreds of dollars. At the library, no card is required for free use of the digital conversion equipment.

Patrons can convert home movies on VHS to a DVD or digital file as well as old slides, film, or photos. Available equipment includes a VHS/DVD recorder, a Wolverine film/slide scanner and a flatbed scanner. According to Imhoff, use of the station can be self-guided, as there are laminated instructions on-site. Library staff is also available to provide instructions and assistance for interested patrons.

Use of some specialized equipment — such as slide adaptors and remotes for the TV and recorder — requires users to provide an ID.

Both the VHS/DVD recorder and Wolverine slide scanner have been available for patrons to check out for years, and can still be checked out with a library card. Imhoff said the library hopes to open up use of the equipment to a larger audience by setting aside designated space. Patrons can go straight to the machine to use it, she said.

Currently, the library sells blank DVDs. However, staff said patrons should plan to bring their own blank DVDs for conversions.
