District 214 Announces Lacrosse Program For 2021

Township High School District 214, which includes Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Hersey, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling high schools in the Northwest suburbs, will launch a district-wide lacrosse program beginning in the 2020-2021 school year.

The new IHSA-sanctioned sports program will be open to both boys and girls. Based on the level of interest, there may by lower levels.

The announcement comes after parent and student input about starting a new program.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. and a number of Journal-area teams already have programs. Local teams currently include Conant (boys, girls), Fremd (boys, girls), Glenbrook South (boys, girls), Loyola Academy (boys, girls), Maine South (boys, girls), Niles Notre Dame (boys), Palatine (boys, girls), Regina Dominican (girls), Resurrection (girls), St. Viator (boys, girls) and Stevenson (boys, girls).

Besides the six MSL East schools that don’t currently field a team, seven other area schools don’t offer a program: Christian Liberty Academy, Leyden, Maine East, Maine West, Niles West, Northridge and Willows Academy.

The IHSA is entering its third season overseeing the sport.

“This new lacrosse program is the direct result of community collaboration,” District 214 board President Dan Petro said. “We know how important it is to create opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and character, and to build social skills such as teamwork and communication. Our goal is to be responsive to the needs of the community and involve community members in our decision-making process. We are grateful to our staff for putting this program together.”
