Des Plaines Blotter: Resident Scammed Out Of Nearly $200K

Road Rage

A woman told police she was sitting in her vehicle in the 1100 block of S. Lee Street at 5:27 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7. A man pulled up, parked next to her, shouted at the woman, and made an obscene gesture at her. He walked away and when he returned, he threw a cup of coffee at her car, splashing her through an open window.

Scam Reported

A resident told police about receiving a telephone call from someone identifying themselves as a governmental employee in Florida. The caller told the victim that a vehicle registered to the victim was found with drugs and blood in it and the victim needed to send money to fix the problem. The victim wired funds totaling $198,500 to the caller before reporting the scam. The calls started on Monday, Sept. 24. Police were contacted on Friday, Oct. 5.

Burglaries
and Thefts

Someone entered a home in the 1600 block of S. Sixth Avenue between 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 and 2 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2. It was unknown if anything was taken from the house.

A pack containing credit cards, glasses, keys, jewelry, prescription medication and $200 cash was taken from an unlocked blue Acura MDX in the 400 block of S. River Road. The burglary occurred before 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30.

A pocket knife and spare change were taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 800 block of E. Greenview Avenue. The burglary occurred between 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 and 6:53 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Someone took about $3 in spare change from an unlocked vehicle in the 1000 block of Woodlawn Avenue between 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 and 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.

CDs were taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 600 block of S. Fifth Avenue between 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 and 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.

A bicycle was taken from the 200 block of S. River Road at 5:24 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4. A witness saw a man in his 20s ride away on the bike.

Social Security cards were taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 1000 block of Hollywood Avenue between 8:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 and 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Someone took spare change from a vehicle in the 900 block of Hollywood Avenue between 9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 and 4:17 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.

A Social Security card was taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 1000 block of Hollywood Avenue between 8:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 and 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Spare change was taken from two unlocked vehicles in the 2100 block of Sprucewood Avenue before 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.

Someone entered a home in the 400 block of N. Seventh Avenue at 10:18 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. A resident was home and went to a neighbor’s home to call police. Officers searched the home but could not locate the suspect. Nothing appeared taken from the house.

A window was broken and a vehicle ransacked in the 1400 block of E. Oakton Street between 11:15 a.m. and 12:55 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

Someone ransacked a vehicle in the 2200 block of Sprucewood Avenue between 10 a.m. and 3:16 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8.

A computer and tablet computers were taken from Orchard Place School in the 2700 block of S. Maple Street between 3:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 and 8:25 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24. The items were located on the rooftop.

Someone took a locked bicycle from the 1000 block of White Street between 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 and 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8.

A locked bicycle was taken from the 700 block of Pearson Street between 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8.

Retail Theft Reported

Two men took baby formula valued at a total of $485.73 from Walgreens Drug Store, 1858 E. Oakton St., at 3:18 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1.

Vandalism Report

Someone cut a fence in the 600 block of Beau Court before 4:11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
