Conant Takes Crown At York

Conant boys basketball has a new coach, but they adapted to familiar surroundings winning their second straight Jack Tosh holiday tournament at York. The Cougars won five straight including a thrilling 54-53 win over Brother Rice, clinching their seventh title, this one under first-year coach Jim Maley.

The Cougars downed McHenry, St. Patrick, York and Wheaton North setting up Saturday night’s final. Ryan Davis led Conant with 31 points and 15 boards before fouling out in the final minute of the first overtime. Davis averaged 24.8 points in the five wins.

The Cougars led 52-49 with 1:06 left in the second overtime. Brother Rice scored four straight to take a 53-52 lead before Jonathan Kolev (10 points) drained a 15 footer with 2.3 seconds left.

“I received a pass from Joe Arriaga,” said Kolev. “I didn’t think about the shot, I just let it go.”

Maley was proud of the Cougars. “After Ryan fouled out we knew others would have to step up,” he said. “We work on plays during practice where Ryan isn’t allowed to score.”
