After an initial report of City Works closing in Wheeling, the restaurant told Journal & Topics that a last minute change during the afternoon of Friday, June 2, will keep the restaurant open for the time being.

City Works management said, at least for now, that the brewery/restaurant will operate under new hours. According to its website, City Works says they plan to operate Wednesdays though Sundays because Mondays and Tuesdays were “naturally slower days.”

Management said the restaurant’s corporation made the original decision, adding they did not know the extent of why the company was about to close one of its three locations. Earlier in the day Friday City Works management mentioned they were prepared to transfer some of their employees to either the Vernon Hills or Schaumburg location.

The City Works in Wheeling opened in July 2019. This location was one of the first restaurants to open in the Wheeling Town Center during its inception in 2019.

Wheeling’s Community Development Department Director Ross Klicker said he did receive notice from City Works that they were possibly closing, but now this last minute change may just keep the restaurant alive.
