Charges are pending, but have yet to be filed against the driver of a black 2013 Infiniti, which allegedly struck and killed a construction worker on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) near Higgins Road in Rosemont Friday night (Sept. 14).

The unnamed driver of the Infiniti crossed into lanes closed for construction at about 10:17 p.m. Friday striking a construction worker and an unoccupied construction van in northbound lanes of I-294 at mile marker 41 near Higgins Road, according to Illinois State Police.

The construction worker was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Frank Caputo, 61, of the 1800 block of Golfview Drive, Bartlett. He and the driver of the Infiniti were both rushed to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois Tollway officials said.

The medical examiner’s office said Caputo was pronounced dead at 10:59 p.m. Friday at Lutheran General. The cause of death was listed as “multiple injuries due to motor vehicle striking pedestrian.”

Caputo worked for Chicago Cut Concrete Cutting. Company Vice President Bob Hopkins issued a written statement Saturday saying, “First, we want to express our sympathy and send our condolences to the Caputo family for this tragic loss. Second, we want to assure all involved that we are taking the necessary steps to cooperate and assist the investigation of this tragic incident.”

Monday, an Illinois State Police spokesman said charges were pending, but had yet to be filed against the driver of the Infiniti. Illinois Tollway officials said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
