Boys Swimming Roundup: Records Fall In Penultimate Week


Here’s a look at some of the swimming action in the Journal-area Friday, March 5:

Glenbrook South 121, Maine South 65: Glenbrook South hosted senior night in the final dual meet of the season and their only in-person home meet of the year. So what does GBS do? Have senior Max Iida break a few school records. Iida broke the 100-yard fly (48.45) and 100-yard backstroke (49.49) records. Iida surpassed Glenbrook South’s oldest record in the 100-yard fly, which stood since 2007 by Andrew Schmitt (50.07). Colin Cordes now owns the oldest with a 1:38.19 in the 200-yard free, set in 2008. Iida broke his brother’s record in the 100 back after Sam Iida held the record of 50.46 since 2017. Iida already entered the season with the 100-yard breast (54.62) record and swam a leg in the 200-yard medley relay record time of 1:31.31 set last year. Iida now has four varsity records, three sophomore records and three freshman records for the Titans. Sami Moussally, a senior, won the 100-yard free (46.71) and 200-yard free (1:42.05) for the Titans. Glenbrook South senior Nathan Vuong won the 200-yard IM (2:01) and 500-yard free (5:05.79). Henry Chen also won the 100-yard breast (59.5) for GBS. Maine South earned wins from Dominic Mazurek in the 50-yard free (22.55) and Joey Roberts in 1-meter diving (266 score). The Titans won all three relay races. Glenbrook South went undefeated in dual meets for a second straight season. GBS posted wins over Evanson (116-70), Stevenson (94-92), New Trier (114-72), Niles West (101-67) and Glenbrook North (115-71), before wrapping the dual season with a 121-65 win over Maine South. The season wraps up Saturday, March 13 with the CSL conference championship.

Buffalo Grove 94, Prospect 92: Buffalo Grove won the MSL East championship with a narrow win over Prospect in the final conference dual meet of the season. Prospect won six events and so did Buffalo Grove, but it was the Bison winning the final event that sealed the win. Buffalo Grove won the 400-yard free relay by over 2 seconds after posting a 3:21.24 time with Tommy Tsiftilis, Luke Czeryba, Matt Stelmaszak and Alex Santiago. Prospect opened the meet with wins in 1-meter diving (Jack Epperson, 230.75) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.85). Buffalo Grove’s Santiago won the 200-yard free (1:45.25) and 100-yard free (48.44). Tsiftilis won the 50 free (22.31) and teammate Erik Swanson won the 100-yard fly (58.33). BG also won the 200-yard free relay in 1:31.4. Prospect’s Tim Hays won the 200-yard IM (1:57.51) and 100-yard breast (1:01.25). The Knights other wins came from Kevin Soltys in the 100-yard back (54.99) and Andrew Tonkovic in the 500-yard free (5:04.66).

Hersey 125, Elk Grove 57: Elk Grove’s Micheal Henske set a new 1-meter diving school record with a 292.1 score to hand the Grenadiers one of their two wins against Hersey. Elk Grove’s other win came from Gavin McCorry in the 500-yard free (5:11.92). Hersey swept the relay races. Hersey’s Kevin Paulina won the 100-yard back (59.45) and 100-yard fly (56.55). Charlie Schmidt also won twice for the Huskies, winning the 50-yard free (24.04) and 100-yard free (52.27). Not wanting to be left out, Hersey’s Jack Wojtowicz won the 200-yard IM (2:13.26) and 100-yard breast (1:08.36). Hersey’s Nathaniel Loch also earned a win, grabbing the 200-yard free in 1:56.64.

Conant 127, Hoffman Estates 55: Conant’s Patrick Recko, Bryce Loeger, Evan Bestor and Spencer Vecchione teamed together to win the 200-yard medley relay in a new school and pool record time of 1:37.29 to start the event on a high note in the neighborhood matchup. Bestor also won the 200-yard free (1:56.79) and 100-yard breast (1:01.43). Loeger, a freshman, also won the 100-yard fly (58.6) and 100-yard back (55.02). Conant sophomore Christian Rettig won two events as well, grabbing the 200-yard IM (2:10.77) and 500-yard free (5:17.78). Recko won the 50-yard free in 22.6. Conant swept the three relay races and also won 1-meter diving with KarlHeintz Megger (228.1).

Rolling Meadows 116, Wheeling 69: Rolling Meadows’ Sam Keeley broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a blazing fast 54.19 time, topping Josh Dellorto’s previous record. Keeley also won the 50-yard free in 21.82. Mustangs freshman diver Kyren Whiting won 1-meter diving with a 243 score. Jacob Hardt won two events for Rolling Meadows, taking the 200-yard free (1:54.47) and 500-yard free (5:11.42). Lukas Slifierz won the 200-yard IM in 2:06.51 and teammate Jeremy Leigh won the 100-yard free in 54.29. The Mustangs also won the 100-yard breast with Russell Mathews (1:05.57). Wheeling won two events and one swimmer played a part in both. Derek Dappert won the 100-yard fly in 1:02.8 and also swam a leg in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.84) win with Gavin Little, Mason Hergert and Alexander Pavlov.
