Boys Soccer Roundup: ND Keeps Shutout Streak Intact


Here’s a look at recent soccer action on the pitch in the Journal-area:

 

Thursday, Sept. 2

 

Loyola Academy 2, Grayslake Central 1: Frank Miedema (2 goals) did all the scoring for Loyola Academy as the Ramblers improved to 4-1 this season.

Palatine 1, Zion-Benton 1: Palatine’s only goal came from Chris Mejia, but the Pirates had to settle for a tie against the Zee-Bees.

Hersey 2, St. Viator 0: Hersey won the Arlington Heights battle for neighborhood bragging rights over St. Viator after goals from Charlie Sieg (1 goal) and Andrew Hamilton (1 goal), while Joe Lenz posted a shutout in goal.

Rolling Meadows 2, Elk Grove 1: Rolling Meadows picked up a MSL East conference win over Elk Grove. The Mustangs were led by Luke Bieda (1 goal), Gage Lockley (1 goal, 1 assist) and Ben Gligor (1 assist).

35th Annual Jim Wolter Titan Invite (at GBS):

Stevenson 1, Glenbard West 0: Kohei Mori scored the only goal of the game off an assist from Nazar Mori in the first half to help Stevenson (4-0-2) pick up the win. Ryan Harper made 8 saves in the shutout.

Glenbrook South 3, Speer Academy 1: Glenbrook South finally picked up its first win of the season after three players found the back of the net. Josh Nelson (1 goal), Conor Beach (1 goal, 1 assist) and Zarko Pavlovic (1 goal) all scored for the Titans.

Prospect 6, St. Patrick 4: Ryan Novak (3 goals) blasted a hat trick to help Prospect win a shootout over St. Patrick. The teams combined for 10 goals, a vast difference from a shutout last time out for Prospect. Owen Walsh (2 goals) and Luis de Santiago (1 goal) also contributed for the Knights. Steven Lopez (3 assists), Massimo Mho (2 assists) and Daniel Barbaric (1 assist) also had a part in the win.

Wednesday, Sept. 1

 

Niles Notre Dame 7, Joliet Catholic 0: Freddy Krug (2 goals) led Notre Dame (6-0) with help from Andy Barrezueta (1 goal), Mike Ziemba (1 goal), Cesar Lopez (1 goal) and Paul Harris (1 goal). The Dons have dominated the early part of their schedule. Notre Dame has outscored their first six opponents 34-0.

St. Viator 6, Marian Catholic 2: St. Viator’s new head coach Byron DeLeon picked up his first win as the Lions pack leader in a convincing victory of Marian Catholic.

Crystal Lake South 2, Palatine 1: Palatine traveled to Wauconda for the Adam Sanchez Memorial Tournament, but dropped a close one to Crystal Lake South. Ray Navarrete scored the goal for the Pirates.

35th Annual Jim Wolter Titan Invite (at GBS):

Glenbrook South 0, Glenbard West 0: Glenbrook South goalie Declan Cloutier posted his second shutout in a row in the Titans Invite. The tournament has been named after longtime GBS soccer head coach Jim Wolter, who passed away March 23, 2021.

Stevenson 4, Speer Academy 1: Christian Yen (1 goal), Filip Janda (2 goals) and Chris Konieczny (1 goal) led Stevenson (3-0-2) over Speer Academy with help from Adam Hamad (1 assist), Maksym Derhachov (2 assists) and Bhargav Devsbhktuni (1 assist). In goal, Stevenson’s Aidan Morris made 3 saves and allowed just 1 goal.

Tuesday, Aug. 31

 

Hersey 6, Wheeling 2: Hersey fell behind 1-0 against MSL East rival Wheeling, but it was almost all Hersey after that. The Huskies scored three straight goals to lead 3-1, before Wheeling scored a goal to pull within one. Hersey scored the final three goals to win. The Huskies were led by Simon Hemenway (2 goals), Adrian Szumski (1 goal, 2 assists), Alex Ganekov (1 goal, 1 assist), Danny Duray (1 goal, 1 assist), Liam McGuffin (1 goal), Michael Choi (1 assist) and Charlie Sieg (1 assist).

New Trier 2, Loyola Academy 1: The Northside College Showcase put two of the best teams in the area against each other and it was New Trier handing Loyola its first loss of the season. Loyola (3-1) scored its only goal from junior Liam Drehkoff.

Mundelein 2, Prospect 1: Prospect’s only goal of the game came from Khalid Farah off an assist from Esteban Lopez, but it wasn’t enough to top Mundelein. The Mustangs were led by Ivan Villegas (1 goal, 1 assist) and Adrian Rosiles (1 goal).

Glenbrook South 0, Stevenson 0

Monday, Aug. 30

 

Niles Notre Dame 10, Steinmetz 0: Notre Dame improved to 5-0 with another shutout victory, but it was the offense that never let up. Alessandro Mordasiewicz (3 goals) and Andy Barrezueta (2 goals) counted for half of the Dons goals, while Freddy Krug (1 goal), Ian Martinez (1 goal), Andres Abdala (1 goal), Angel Panora-Garcia (1 goal) and Max Stalenczyk (1 goal) rounded out the scoring.

Downers Grove North 3, Leyden 2: Leyden dropped to 1-2 this season with a second straight loss.
