Here’s a look at the boys basketball action in the Journal-area from Monday-Wednesday, March 1-3:

 

Wednesday, March 3

 

Rolling Meadows 69, Elk Grove 24: The score was 2-2 after the first 3 minutes and 39 seconds of the game, then Rolling Meadows went on a 19-0 run to end the opening quarter starting with a bucket by Max Christie (16 points, 10 rebounds, 4 3-pointers) with 4:20 to go. They extended it to a 23-0 run, leading 25-2, before Elk Grove’s Brandon Burns (11 pts.) stopped the run with a basket with 5:17 left in the half. Burns scored all 4 points in the opening half for Elk Grove (0-9, 0-7 MSL East). The Mustangs ended the first half on a 13-0 run to enter half up 38-4. Elk Grove snapped the run with a free throw early in the third, but Christie nailed three straight 3-pointers to start a one-man 9-0 run, making it 47-5 with 5:48 to play in the third. Rolling Meadows led 60-16 after three quarters. With a running clock in the fourth, Rolling Meadows (11-0) coasted in the fourth with the backups in. The Mustangs were led by Foster Ogbonna (12 pts., 8 rebounds), Cameron Christie (10 pts.), Luke Duffer (6 pts.), Daniel Sobkowicz (5 pts.), Aiden Hosler (5 pts., 7 assists), Orlando Thomas (4 pts.), Joey Mickey (4 pts.), Alex Lebeau (4 pts.), Ryan Schoessling (2 pts.) and Michael Brigham (1 pt.).

Stevenson 47, Libertyville 45: Stevenson (9-3, 4-3 NSC) remained hot, edging rival Libertyville (6-7, 4-3 NSC) in another great conference game. The Patriots were led by Jacob Morris (13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 charges), Andrew Chieng (11 pts., 3 assists), Darius Clemopns (10 pts., 5 rebounds, 3 assists), Evan Porto (10 pts.) and Jaden Evans (4 pts., 3 assists, 3 rebounds). The Wildcats were led by Chase Bonder (18 pts., 5 rebounds), Blake Ellingson (9 pts.) and Jack Huber (8 pts.). Stevenson plays Warren Friday (March 5) in the quarterfinals of the NSC Tournament and plays Palatine Saturday at 3 p.m. in a nonconference game.

Evanston 54, Maine South 52 (3 OT): No. 4 Evanston (9-1) barely survived against Maine South after the Wildkits tried to run out the clock for most of the overtime periods to take away any of South’s chances for a win. The Hawks finally fouled Evanston’s Blake Peters, who became the program’s all-time leading scorer (1,490 points), with 1.5 seconds left in triple overtime. Peters made both buckets and Maine South was unable to get a shot off to try and win the game. Marko Anderson (22 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Sean Gallery (20 pts., 8 rebounds, 2 assists) led Maine South (11-6, 2-5 CSL South). The Hawks led 26-22 at half. The game was tied at 46 at the end of regulation. 

Palatine 76, Lake Zurich 48: Palatine’s Julian Campbell (21 points) led a group of 11 different scorers for the Pirates in a blowout nonconference win over the Bears. Palatine scored 70-plus points for a third straight game.

Northridge 28, Nazareth 26: Northridge (6-3) was led by Andrew Brockmeier (11 points) and Sean Flood (8 pts.) in a low scoring affair over Nazareth (2-8). 

Brother Rice 38, Loyola Academy 36 (OT): Loyola (11-4, 6-2 CCL) may not have won on the court, but they won off of it by raising $4,265 for stage 4 breast cancer research through METAvivor. On the court, Ben Moser (16 points) led the Ramblers with Vaughn Pemberton (6 pts., 4 rebounds, 4 assists), Scotty Dean (5 pts.) and Max Garcia (5 pts.). 

 

Tuesday, March 2

 

Maine South 59, Highland Park 39: Maine South (11-5, 2-4 CSL South) rolled over Highland Park in a CSL crossover game. Maine South led 16-12 after one quarter and 27-19 at half.  The lead was extended to 45-28 after three quarters. The Hawks were led by Nikola Zelenovic (18 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds; 6 3-pointers) and Marko Anderson (14 pts., 12 rebounds). Also contributing for Maine South were Milan Adamovic (8 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds), Sean Gallery (7 pts., 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Ryan Leyden (4 pts., 5 assists, 4 rebounds), Ryan Modert (6 pts.) and Julian Triffo (2 pts.).

Proviso East 70, Leyden 64 (OT): Proviso East’s Jaloni Johnson exploded for 45 points against Leyden (3-4), which blew a nice 12-point lead entering the fourth. Leyden was up 41-29 entering the fourth, but Proviso East outscored them 25-13 in the fourth to force overtime. Proviso East then outscored them 16-10 in the extra period to win 70-64. Leyden was led by Jiovanny Garcia (29 points, 7 3-pointers) and Isaiah Gibson (15 pts., 10 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists). The Eagles had 31 turnovers to hurt their chances to win. 

Hersey 71, Elk Grove 36: Hersey (11-2, 7-1 MSL East) stayed on fire with another impressive win and the Huskies were lucky enough to receive a vote in the AP Polls for the first time since 1995. The Huskies were one of four teams to receive 1 vote. Brent Wolff (15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists), Ben Randall (12 pts., 6 rebounds, 1 block), Jack Muglia (9 pts.) and Drew Zagorski (7 pts., 3 rebounds, 2 assists) led the pack for Hersey. The Huskies did it all without leading scorer Ethan Roberts (222 points in 11 games). Hersey had a dozen players score in the win. Elk Grove dropped to 0-8 (0-6 MSL East) this season with the loss.

Fremd 59, Conant 49: Fremd (8-2, 7-1 MSL West) grinded out a win over Conant to remain in contention for the MSL West crown. The Vikings were led by Eli Schoffstall (21 points), Chris Smyros (17 pts.) and Jack Walsh (12 pts.). Conant was led by Sean Beckman (20 pts., 6 rebounds). The Cougars had eight different players score. The Cougars hit 11-of-24 3-pointers in the loss.

Buffalo Grove 60, Prospect 44: Kam Craft (28 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) led the Bison in scoring again, though Kyle Brosnahan (10 pts.) and Ayden Anderson (10 pts.) contributed in the MSL East battle. Prospect had 11 players score, but the problem was there wasn’t a single scorer above 8. Daniel Raupp scored 8 points to lead the Knights. Buffalo Grove held Prospect to 24 points over the first three quarters, before the Knights scored 20 points in the final eight minutes. Buffalo Grove led 33-15 at half.

Niles North 67, Niles West 28: North jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back against their district rivals. North led 38-14 at half and 58-21 entering the fourth. The Wolves were led by Hazma Khan (6 pts.), AJ Herrera (6 pts.) and Moses LeBlanc (6 pts.).

St. Viator 62, Carmel 54: St. Viator was able to win the ESCC battle over Carmel after senior Aidan Harrington dropped 22 points. The Lions also received contributions from Eli Aldana (12 pts.) and RJ Gamble (11 pts.).

Palatine 74, Barrington 67 (OT): Julian Campbell (31 points, 9 rebounds) wouldn’t be denied for Palatine as the Pirates knocked off rival Barrington, a top 15 state team in the most recent AP Polls for Class 4A. Tyler Swierczek (13 pts.) and Grant Dersnah (12 pts.) also contributed for the Pirates in the big win.

Glenbrook South 63, Maine West 52: Glenbrook South pulled out the win to improve to 12-1, but Maine West made sure they earned it. Jared Pearson led Maine West with 29 points.

Monday, March 1

 

Evanston 63, Maine West 54: Maine West fell behind 21-5 after one quarter and were down 31-9 midway through the second before heating up some. It was 36-21 at half for Evanston, but Maine West outscored them 22-14 in the third to cut the deficit to 50-43. No. 4 Evanston closed the game out, outscoring West 13-11 the final eight minutes. Jared Pearson (22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block) and Isaac Pittman (11 pts., 3 rebounds) led the Warriors on offense. Ten players in total scored for Maine West.

Stevenson 59, Carmel Catholic 40: Stevenson picked up a nonconference win as they topped Carmel by 19 points. Stevenson (8-3, 3-3) was led by Darius Clemons (15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals), Evan Porto (15 pts., 3 rebounds, 1 steal) and Andrew Chieng (9 pts., 5 assists). Carmel (4-7, 3-3) was led by Bryce Moore (12 pts., 5 rebounds), Jalen Burton (12 pts., 4 rebounds) and A.J. Ajaga (4 pts., 6 rebounds).

Maine South 45, Nazareth 37: Maine South (10-5, 2-4 CSL South) snapped a mini 2-game losing streak with help from Marko Anderson (19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists), Sean Gallery (10 pts., 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) and Milan Adamovic (9 pts., 1 assist) in a nonconference game.

Loyola Academy 41, DePaul Prep 37: Loyola (11-3, 6-1 CCL) knocked off ranked DePaul Prep with help from Scotty Dean (12 points, 3 assists), Vaughn Pemberton (12 pts., 3 rebounds, 3 assists) and Ben Moser (7 pts., 3 rebounds).
