Blackhawk Cup Begins Road To United Center

The 2023 Blackhawk Cup High School Hockey State Tournament began this weekend with both the Red Division (pure teams) and Combined Division area teams in action.

Here are the latest results:

RED Division

Stevenson 6 Evanston 2

The defending state champions looked every bit the part Saturday morning as they defeated Evanston 6-2.

The third-seed Patriots will face Glenbrook North in the quarter-finals of the Blackhawk Cup this Saturday at 6:50 p.m. at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

The Pats were led on offense by forward Max Poretto who scored two goals with one assist. Stevenson would score two goals in each of the three periods played. All the while, Stevenson goalie Andrew Smoller would stop 26 of the 28 shots he faced. His counterpart, Evanston goaltender Caleb Gerstein would have 25 saves.

Glenbrook South 6 Fenwick 0

The second-seeded Glenbrook South Titans had their way with Chicago Catholic Hockey League (CCHL) power Fenwick Friars in a 6-0 victory.

The Titans face seventh-seed Loyola Academy Gold Sunday at 4:55 p.m. In Bensenville in the quarterfinals of the Red Division.

Glenbrook South was led in scoring by forward Jason Ban who scored two of the three Titans goals in the opening 17 minutes of play. The Titans would get scoring from five different skaters in the game: Zach Freimuth, Wyatt Sherwood, Mac Callaghan, Adrian Sokol and Jason Ban (2G).

Loyola Academy (Gold) 3 St. Viator 2 OT

The Loyola Academy Ramblers ended the hopes of tenth-seed St. Viator Saturday with a 3-2 overtime victory.

The Lions were hoping to make a return trip to the finals of the Red Division after coming up short last year to Stevenson in a 5-0 loss. They were paced on offense by forward Charlie Hoffman who scored in each of the first two periods.

However, the Ramblers would get goals from forwards Henry Fitzsimons in the opening period, Charlie Baine in the middle period and the game-winning goal from Mikey Baker at the 3:43 mark of the first overtime session.

“Yeah, this game could have gone either way,” Loyola defenseman Ryan Cowen said. “We’ve beaten them once, tied them once and lost to them during the season. So I’m not surprised how things went today. Our fore checking was really good today. But that’s because we spent a lot of time in practice working on it.”
