The sky will once again light up over Maine Township High School Dist. 207 land this summer after the district’s board of education approved at its Monday (April 2) night meeting a contract with the city of Park Ridge for its annual Fourth of July fireworks.

After Dist. 207 Board President Carla Owen brought up the annual request from the city for the fireworks, Supt. Dr. Ken Wallace said he had “a nice conversation” with Park Ridge Mayor Marty Maloney regarding the various ways the district waives fees for the city.

Besides not charging for the fireworks event, the district also recently agreed to allow the Park Ridge Civic Orchestra to hold three-to-four concerts each year at Maine South High School, Wallace said. The orchestra will no longer be able to perform at the Pickwick Theatre due to enhancements made there.

“We’re going to accommodate them for their 25th season,” Wallace said, adding that he discussed with Maloney possible ways to offset costs incurred from city events.

Board member Sean Sullivan asked the superintendent if the matter should be tabled until further discussion took place on offsetting costs.

“My advice would be to pass it tonight and continue to talk and see if we can get some movement made,” Wallace said, adding that it would be “a little late” to not move forward with the fireworks as usual.

The fireworks program will take place July 3 on the grounds of Maine East High School at Potter Road and Dempster Street.
