Council OKs Truck Repairs, Salt Purchase

The Rolling Meadows City Council on Tuesday, Mar. 9 agreed to repairs to a refuse truck, a new landscape maintenance contract, the purchase of salt, and allowing a data provider to run fiber cable along Wilke Road.

* Aldermen agreed to $15,373 in repairs to the refuse truck, a 2002 Sterling chassis with a Leach body originally purchased for $120,000. The repairs include the tailgate, the refuse push out panel, the hydraulic system, the radiator, and replacement of the rear vision camera system.

On Nov. 17, 2009, aldermen denied the purchase of a new garbage truck to replace the unit. At that meeting, Public Works Director Fred Vogt warned aldermen of upcoming repairs that would be needed to keep the vehicle on the road. Only Ald. Jim Larsen (7th) voted to replace the truck in November.

Standard Equipment Company in Chicago will complete repairs to the truck.

* Aldermen also agreed to a contract with Lundstrom's Nursery of Wheeling to perform maintenance on city-owned sites such as parkways, entrance ramp areas, city buildings, and center islands. The city reduced the number of times several of the areas will be mowed in 2010 from 2009 levels in a money-saving effort.

Lundstrom's was the low bidder with a price of $33,327.60. They also offered the option to extend the contract to up to three years at the same price.

Aldermen approved the contract, but added a 30-day escape clause allowing the city to terminate the agreement at any time. City Attorney Jim Macholl warned the council that Lundstrom's could ask for a similar clause from their end before finalizing the agreement.

* Council members approved a resolution for the purchase of road salt for the 2010–2011 winter. Renewing the purchase contract before the Mar. 19 deadline locks the city in to a price not to exceed 5% greater than the current price. For the 2009–2010 winter, Rolling Meadows purchased salt at $58.89 per ton. The resolution allows for the purchase of up to 3,000 tons through the State of Illinois Joint Purchase Program.

* Finally, aldermen agreed to a license agreement allowing Kentucky Data Link to place fiber optic cable in the city's right-of-way along Wilke Road. The lines would run from Central Road north into Arlington Hts. at Cindy Court, and then back into Rolling Meadows near Campbell Street, Vogt explained.

The company agreed to pay the city $2,000 to expedite the permit review and approval. The license is for 10 years with two 10-year renewal options.
