Cafe May Open Inside Roundy's
By TIM O'CONNOR Journal & Topics Reporter
An indoor and outdoor café may be part of the Roundy's Supermarket under construction in Arlington Hts.
The proposed café is 970 sq. ft., including a 450 sq. ft. outdoor area. It would seat 37 inside with an additional 24 seats on the patio.
Matt Dabrowski, development planner for the village, said the café would be larger than the standard Subway, which is between 550 and 650 sq. ft.
The restaurant will have a full kitchen and serve chicken, pizza, and sandwiches, among other items.
The café, which was reviewed by the village's plat and subdivision committee last week, would have to be approved by the plan commission and village board.
Dabrowski said a similar café is located in the Dominick's at Town and Country Mall.
"It's starting to become very common with grocery stores," he said of the restaurants.
Vivian King, director of public affairs for Roundy's, said cafes are located in many, but not all, of the supermarket chain's stores. However, she declined to elaborate on plans for the Arlington Hts. location.
"Until the approval process is complete we don't really comment on what is going to be in the store," she said, adding that more information will be released in March. The store is located on the former site of Lattof Chevy, 802 E. Northwest Highway.
She confirmed the likely opening date for the 68,000 sq. ft. store would be in late May or June.
Milwaukee-based Roundy's is one of the oldest and largest grocery store chains in the Midwest. The company operates 152 stores in Wisconsin and Minnesota under the Pick 'N Save, Copps Food Center and Rainbow Foods brands. The brand for the Arlington Hts. store has not yet been released.
