Blood Drive Mar. 10 At Village Hall
The Wheeling Board of Health plans a community blood drive from 1:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 10 at Village Hall at 2 Community Blvd.
Donors can make appointments by calling or e-mailing Beverly Slaby of the village's health board. Although appointments are appreciated, walk-ins are welcome.
Potential donors must be at least 17-years-old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and must not have donated blood within the previous eight weeks. LifeSource encourages donors to eat a substantial meal and drink extra liquids before their donation time.
The donation process is fast, easy and as safe as a medical blood test. Potential donors are asked a series of questions about their health and lifestyle and are given a mini-physical including temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood iron level. The donation itself takes about 12 minutes and is relatively painless; the entire process including interview lasts about one hour. Donors are free to leave after a brief rest and refreshment period and can usually resume their normal, daily routine immediately
Blood donors of all types are needed every day for critically ill patients, accident victims, people needing surgery, and those patients suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer and leukemia.
If all eligible people would donate, there would never be a blood shortage.
There will be door prizes of restaurant gift certificates.
