Morrison: 'It's Time For New Blood'

By RICHARD MAYER Assistant Managing Editor

Palatine resident and local business owner Tom Morrison believes a desire by voters for new blood in Springfield propelled him to victory over long-time incumbent Suzie Bassi in Tuesday's Republican primary election in the 54th State House District.

Morrison led Bassi by more than 800 unofficial votes as of yesterday morning (Wednesday). All but two of the district's 81 precincts had reported with Morrison tallying 5,303 (54.36%) unofficial votes compared to Bassi's 4,452 (45.64%).

Bassi was hoping to face and defeat Democrat Matt Flamm in November's general election to claim her seventh consecutive term in office.

Repeated phone calls by the Journal to Bassi went unreturned.

"We worked extremely hard, me and my volunteers, and spent countless hours over the last several months going door-to-door," said Morrison. "I walked about 83% of the district and the recurring theme I kept hearing was six terms is long enough for anyone to be in office. Suzie Bassi had her chance, but it's time for new blood, new ideas, and new leadership."

Morrison said the message between now and November he will continue to spread includes a need for more assertive representation, the need for someone who the people can rally behind, opposing tax increases, and opposing out-of-control borrowing and spending.

"I will continue with the same message with the same energy and drive to get out and meet voters between now and November," said Morrison. "That was a winning message now and will be again in November."

Morrison said he understands that some voters have grown weary of robotic calls and mailboxes full of flyers, so in the weeks and months to come, he said he plans to continue to talk to constituents on their front porches and listen to concerns. He also said he would like to try and walk the district again.

"I am extremely grateful at the people who were willing to put their trust in me and I extend an olive branch to the people who did not vote for me, which was significant," said Morrison. He said he would be willing to work with Bassi to ensure he defeats Flamm in November.

Votes are expected to be certified within the next couple weeks.

The 54th District includes portions of Palatine, Barrington, Inverness, Deer Park, Hoffman Estates, and Rolling Meadows.
