Mayor Reviewing Trustee Candidates

By TIM O'CONNOR Journal & Topics Reporter

Arlington Hts. Mayor Arlene Mulder has gotten about a dozen applications from residents looking to fill the vacancy on the Village Board.

"I'm looking through everyone's resume and evaluating their potential and looking for someone who can hit the ground running because of the budget issue," she said.

The board seat was vacated in December when Helen Jensen resigned for health reasons. The mayor has 60 days from Jensen's resignation on Dec. 31 to name an appointment and the board has another 30 days to approve that person. Mulder said she expects to choose an appointment by the end of February.

There are about 14 months left on Jensen's term.

When she announced her retirement, Jensen, who was the only female on the board, said she wanted to see another woman take her place.

Mulder said she would consider gender balance in her appointment but that it wouldn't necessarily be more important than other factors, such as the person's commitment to the village.

She said she'd like to see someone new on the board.

"I think a fresh voice is always good and I've tried to do that," Mulder said.
