Wheeling Freshmen To View Hersey Teacher's Documentary

A teacher at John Hersey High School directed a documentary detailing the images of war through the eyes of children who will have its Chicago premiere for the Wheeling High School freshmen class on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Wheeling.

History teacher Bruce David Janu directed "Crayons and Paper," a film detailing the images of the war in Darfur and Sri Lanka as seen through the drawings of children in the region. The images include helicopters attacking villages, armed troops burning homes and shooting children as planes roar through the sky, and bodies lying limp and bleeding on the ground.

The film features Dr. Jerry Ehrlich and the work he has done with Doctors Without Borders in both Darfur and Sri Lanka. It had its world premiere at Dam Short Film Festival in Nevada earlier in the year and has since played in numerous festivals all over the country. In September, the film won a "Make a Difference" Award from the COMMFFEST (Global) Community Film Festival in Toronto.

Janu teaches Advanced Placement United States History and sociology at Hersey, located in Arlington Hts.
