Smoking Blamed In Condo Fire

A cigarette caused the fire that sent a woman to the hospital and destroyed her condo, according to the Arlington Hts. Fire Department.

"The cause was accidental due to careless use of smoking materials," said Deputy Chief Kenneth Koeppen.

The woman was taken to Northwest Community Hospital on Friday, Nov. 13, with burns and smoke inhalation. The woman's name has not been released and her status is unknown.

The fire started at 5:30 p.m. in a two-story complex on the corner of Lincoln Lane and Miner Street. It took 24 firefighters about 10 minutes to control the blaze, which wiped out the woman's condo but caused only minor smoke damage to other parts of the building, according to Koeppen.

The condo had no sprinkler system. About $100,000 worth of damage was done to the woman's home, the fire department said.
