Election Filing Period Begins
Candidates seeking election in next February's primary had the opportunity to be first to file petitions to get on the ballot last Monday.
Many seeking offices that cover Arlington Hts., Elk Grove Village and Palatine did just that.
The most high profile race in the area is likely to be for U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk's (R-10th) old seat in Congress. Kirk has turned his sights to a run for the U.S. Senate. The district includes a small portion of Des Plaines and larger sections of Mt. Prospect, Prospect Hts. Arlington Hts. and communities north to Wisconsin and the North Shore.
Republicans William Cadigan of Winnetka, Elizabeth Coulson of Glenview, Robert Dold of Kenilworth, Dick Green of Winnetka and Paul Hamann of Lake Forest and Democrats Julie Hamos of Wilmette and Dan Seals of Wilmette all filed petitions to see their names on the primary ballot.
The 10th Congressional Dist. also has a central committeeman's post for each political party. Democrats Lauren Beth Gash of Highland Park, Bill Brandt of Winnetka and Daniel Pierce of Highland Park filed petitions to appear on the ballot for that post.
In the other area congressional race incumbent U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-6th) is the only candidate to file petitions so far. Filing petitions to run for 6th Dist. Democratic central committeeman is Joan Brennan of Elk Grove Village and Terrell Barnes of Roselle.
Incumbent State Rep. Suzanne "Suzie" Bassi (R-54th) of Palatine has filed to run again to keep her seat, so far with no opposition.
Incumbent State Rep. Mark Walker (D-66th) of Arlington Hts. has filed to hold on to his seat with no opposition so far.
Arlington Hts. resident Ruth O'Connell filed petitions to run for Wheeling Township Democratic committeeman.
Running for Cook County commissioner in the 17th Dist. are two candidates: incumbent Commissioner Elizabeth Doody Gorman (R-17th) of Orland Park and Victor Forys of Park Ridge.
