Law Bans Plows From Blocking Handicap Spots

Handicapped or disabled residents and motorists in Buffalo Grove will not have to worry this winter about handicapped parking spaces being consumed by snow.

Village trustees recently approved an ordinance that amends a section of village code that prohibits the deposit of snow and obstruction of any parking spaces designated for disabled parking and accessible routes to and from disabled parking as defined in the Illinois accessibility code.

The village will utilize a number of communication means available to encourage shopping centers, industrial buildings and office buildings to comply with this ordinance.

Additionally, the village will obtain 24-hour contact information from appropriate property owners so staff may contact them if snowplow contractors are not following the regulations.

The Building and Zoning Dept. will be responsible for enforcement of this ordinance.

When village staff is made aware of a violation, they will notify one of the deputy building commissioners who will then contact the management company to notify them of the violation and request immediate compliance. If compliance is not obtained in a reasonable manner, a ticket will be issued to the management company.
