Eye On Red Light Cameras
Village, Police Taking Closer Look At Possibilities
Could automated red light cameras be coming to Buffalo Grove?
According to village officials, running red lights is one of the most dangerous forms of aggressive driving and the leading cause of accidents at intersections.
The primary goal of the initiative is to modify a person's driving behavior resulting in safer roadways, so the village is seeking technology that will assist the village/police department in its safety objectives.
If approved by the village board, photo enforcement system cameras would be installed at to be determined high-crash intersections.
The village responds to more than 200 crashes per year at 10 high crash intersections in Buffalo Grove; 20% to 25% of those crashes result in personal injury, according to village officials.
The cameras would only take pictures of those vehicles that enter an intersection after the light has turned red. Vehicles that are in the intersection on a yellow or red would not be photographed.
The data would likely include a date and time stamp, vehicle speed, camera location and time into red, plus pictures and a video clip of the violation.
This program is currently being researched by a team consisting of village management personnel, police representatives, and the village attorney.
A report and recommendation will be forthcoming to the village board after July.
