No More Fireworks?

While Rolling Meadows plans a fireworks display at Salk Park on the Fourth of July, it could be the last one due to budget constraints.

"We're preparing 2010 budget," explained Jim Egeberg, finance director. "Do you continue to force staff to take pay freezes and layoffs at the same time you're spending money on Fourth of July fireworks?"

The city is already instituting cuts in periphery items for the parade such as candy and other giveaways.

"We spent less money on some of the stuff," Egeberg said.

This is the final year of a three-year contract for the fireworks display. The event will cost the city $20,000 this year.

The council will examine future fireworks displays at a future meeting, Egeberg added.
