Palatine Library Renovations Begin Next Week

The Palatine Public Library District will begin renovating the second floor and underground garage of its main library branch, 700 N. North Ct., tentatively Monday, June 15.

Second floor renovations are expected to begin Monday at 6:30 a.m. instead of the initial permitted 7 a.m. However, no deliveries or outside construction activities will begin until 7 a.m.

Underground garage renovations will be conducted after regular library hours (overnight) to minimize the impact on daytime library parking demands. The contractor will install temporary sound barrier walls in the garage to reduce construction noise.

The garage portion of the project involves repairs to cracks in the floor and sealing of the surface after repairs have been done.

Second floor renovations include freeing up 5,000 sq. ft. of staff space to turn into space for patrons.

According to Susan Strunk, library director, a new computer lab will be added in addition to the seating and vending area. Additionally, the library will be adding a more efficient reference desk and three additional group study rooms.

Repairs to the upper level of the garage will cost $245,747.50 while renovations to the second floor of the library will cost $696,723.

According to Village Manager Reid Ottesen, the exterior portion of the work will be conducted in "bits and pieces" throughout the summer months.

Strunk said renovations to the second floor will continue through October.

She added this is the first major renovation for the library facility since it first opened in late 1993.
