The Artists Association of Elk Grove is hosting Art Centre 2008 in October. The juried art show deadline is Aug. 21. The juried exhibit will be open to all fine artists within a 150-mile radius of Chicago. All work must be original and completed within the last two years. Benefits & Fundraisers

The Palatine Jaycees, in conjunction with American Legion Post 690, will be hosting Bingo as part of Palatine Street Fest activities on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. in the American Legion parking lot across from Towne Square. Each card will cost $1 and the winner will win half the pot. The balance of the pot will be donated to Camp New Hope, a recreational camp for special needs individuals eight-years-old through adult.

The Historic Methodist Campground of Des Plaines hosts a car show/fundraiser on Sunday through Aug. 31, from 2-6:30 p.m. The fundraiser includes People's Choice awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophy), food, an Olympic Size swimming pool, children's moon jump, vendor and swap spaces, RC truck racecourse. The Schaumburg Fire Department may put the fire out, but their dedication to the Muscular Dystrophy Association is a flame that will continue to burn. The firefighters will be filling their boots to fight neuromuscular diseases on August 15 and August 23 as part of the nationwide Fill-the-Boot campaign to benefit MDA. They will be collecting donations from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. On August 15, firefighters will be located at the intersection of Algonquin and Meacham roads on August 15 and Roselle and Schaumburg roads on August 23. Dropping a donation into a firefighter's boot will help MDA provide wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices. Donations also help fund research, clinics, support groups and summer camp.

Bring the family to Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago's Second Annual Hike for Lung Health at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21. The one and three mile hikes will be held along Chicago's lakefront at Montrose Harbor and in Palatine at Deer Grove Forest Preserve. After the hike, join participants and emcee ABC7's Ravi Baichwal for a family picnic and entertainment. Proceeds from Hike for Lung Health will support lung disease research, advocacy and education programs of RHAMC and charity partners. The Run For Cover Walk/Run will be held Oct. 25 starting at 9 a.m. in Busse Woods, groves 5-16, near Elk Grove Village. All proceeds from this event provide hope and build help for the temporary homeless for a safe place to live. For more information and costs, visit www.runforcover5k.com.

The Festival Chorus of Harper College is seeking area singers to take part in the fall/winter concert season. The 70-voice community chorus will be performing Handel's "Messiah" and a selection of much-loved holiday carols at its annual holiday concert Sunday. The August meeting of the Northwest Suburban Astronomers will feature "The Birth of the Universe" by Dr. Satish Desai, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. In this talk, Dr. Desai, a physicist at Fermilab, will explain how the tiny and fleeting world of subatomic particles has shaped the vast and eternal universe in which we live. The Indian Trails Public Library in Wheeling will welcome Alex Brooks, master dog trainer, for a dog training seminar on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The seminar is free and open to the public. Brooks is the owner of the Alex Brooks Canine Center in Des Plaines. His seminar, ìTraining To Be Top Dog: Guiding Your Pet To Good Behaviorî will cover a variety of behavior-related issues including how to train an aggressive, timid or overactive dog; basic commands; ending excessive barking; leash training; tips for purchasing a dog; the differences between pet shops, private breeders and shelter dogs; understanding your dogís body language, and how to introduce a new dog into the home or to an existing dog. With summer coming to a close, Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation has scheduled an event to renew friendships and memberships. An evening of food, fun and music is scheduled Sunday, Aug. 24, starting with a 5 p.m. wine reception, a 5:30 p.m. barbecue dinner and entertainment by Jeff and Janis at 7 p.m. at 7800 W. Lyons, Morton Grove. New and renewed temple members are free; cost is $20 for guests that can be applied to a 2008-09 membership. St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, Prospect Hts., will offer Bible Study programs this fall. Two programs are planned: "The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible" is a 24-session Catholic study program of 73 books of the Bible. It will be offered Monday evenings at 7 p.m. or Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. The program includes a video lecture by Jeff Cavins, with classroom discussion. There is a fee for a workbook and the classes begin Sept. 15 (Monday) or Sept. 17 (Wednesday). "Matthew: The King and His Kingdom" shows how Jesus builds on the foundation laid in the Old Testament to inaugurate the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. This class is recommended for those who already have an overall knowledge of the Bible. It will be offered on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. Begins Sept. 16 (Tuesday) or Sept. 17 (Wednesday). Workbook is extra. Vendors are wanted for a Craft Show & Flea Market hosted by the United UCC Churches of Bensenville (Immanuel, Peace, St. John's) to be held on Saturday, Sept. 6 (rain date Sept. 13), from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at St. John's Church, 601 N. Rt. 83 at Foster, Bensenville. A 10 ft. x 10 ft. space is $20 (inside and outside spaces available). Two or more spaces for one vendor will be $15 each. A table and two chairs will be an additional $10 and access to electricity (inside spaces only) an additional $5. Schools

Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School, 9300 Capital Dr. in Wheeling, invites the community to be a part of its ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. Attendees will see what school officials are doing to help take care of the environment, as well as learn about the programs they offer for children ages 2-12.
